Wasn't Tetris released in 1989 and was really popular the same year?

No, Tetris was popular from the spring to summer of 1990.

Which was around the time that I actually started playing it. A year later, I received a GameBoy (which I still I have today), which came with a Tetris game cartridge.

The Pokémon Gold & Silver soundtrack in general is really awesome. Though the games didn't come out in North America until October 2000, they were already released in Japan by November 1999, thus making them technically count.

Tetris was the original "bundled" game with the Gameboy when it was released to North America in 1989. It may have been popular in 1990, but it was also popular in 1989. I know. I had one.

It was still more of a phenomenon in the summer of 1990, though.
These were out in the fall of 1990: http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/214819-tetris-crackers-taste-mother-russia-in-your-mouth-/TetrisCrackers-Front-noscale.jpg
