Subject: Titanic (1997) -- what's your opinion on it?

Hating on this film always seemed to be the cool thing to do but I actually like this movie a lot.

I thought it was too long and the ending frustrated me because

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT

they both fit on that board.  Physically we know there was room because Rose was laying down on it the whole time.  Also Jack was pretty thin so I don't think he weighed enough to make them sink if they were both on it.

It was a big phenomeon that I got heavily into, though not until after it had won its Oscars. I even bought a PC game entitled "An Adventure Out Of Time", visited an attraction in Orlando, and bought the special edition DVD release in 2005. Afterwards, I've sort of burned out of it, even by for the ship's centennial in 2012. I'd still watch it if I'm in the mood, but I find all of the other versions of the tale more interesting to watch and compare.

Not a big fan towards it. I think I saw a little bit of the movie, where everyone was panicking for their lives when it hit the iceberg.

I'm a bit of a history buff, so Titanic has always been a favorite of mine (even if some elements of the movie aren't necessarily "historically accurate"). I know Titanic can be corny at times, but it's a well acted and well directed work, and from perhaps my favorite genre (Epic/Disaster film), so I guess you could could say it hits all my "sweet spots".

Plus, Titanic has the distinction of being one of the few movies I actually saw in a theater as a kid. We didn't have a theater in my hometown growing up, so seeing a movie on the big screen was a rare treat for us. I saw Titanic with my cousin and younger brother in early 1998 when the movie was right in the middle of it's record run at the top of the box office, and it's a memory I'll always cherish. The only thing, though, was that our parents were sitting right next to us watching as well during the scene where Leo DiCaprio paints the naked picture of Kate Winslet. That's kind of an embarrsing thing for a 10-year-old boy to see when sitting right next to his mother! :-[ ;D

I was never a big fan of it either. I only saw a part of it too, not the whole thing...up until the iceberg scene.

Oh. I thought the iceberg scene spoiled most of the movie for me, since that's what the movie stood for. At least.

Well, that was a key point, so, it's probably no surprise. By the way, when I watched it, it had just been released to video.

Plus, it's not like the movie was that important historically until the end. Unless some historian could correct me on that.

I'm a history buff too, especially Victorian and Edwardian era stuff, so that's a big reason why I like the movie. The legacy of the disaster has always captivated my imagination.

My parents saw it in the theater a few different times but they never brought me. The first time I saw it was shortly after it was released on VHS -- my cousins invited our family to their lake house and they had just bought a copy so we watched it one afternoon that weekend.

I think that some people hate it just for the truth that it was a very popular movie.  :D

Plus it's considered a "chick flick."

I was a big fan when it released. Not necessarily for the schmaltzy love story but for what an amazing job they did with the handling of that period of time and the facts of what happened. The Edwardian era was brief, but a time of great change, and the people living it were standing in two different worlds and they captured that.

In my opinion, up until then most films and tv shows were not that dedicated to being true to period, and if you watch period pieces made before then, you will catch things that are completely out of place or things that are not true to the period, but not with this one. If I were to watch it today, I would still get the feel of the Edwardian period perfectly (society emerging from strict conservatism to more liberal views, advances and modernizing of science, and technology advances with numerous inventions that helped make the modern day to day life easier, etc). From the period costuming and furnishings as well as the etiquette and social norms of the time. I love that they got so many things right with this.

Also many 'minor' characters in the movie were real historical figures, and they did get quite a bit of that right too- as far as what they were known for, details of mannerisms, the gossip about them at the time, and accounts from survivors as to how they behaved or what happened with them up until the sinking, at least.

I think that because of their meticulous attention with this piece, and refusal to half-ass it, they set the bar and we have quality period pieces now. Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife and Outlander are examples of this.

I like the film, a bit on the long side, and never heard the singing at the closing credits.

Also, it is a good film for spotting mistakes, like:

"The dolphins seen in the "I'm King of the World" segment (when Jack and Fabrizio are up on the bow of the ship) are Pacific white-sided dolphins. The Titanic was in the North Atlantic."

And

"The hands sketching Rose are clearly too old to belong to Jack. (They actually belong to director James Cameron.)"

BTW, there are more mistakes.
