The '90s seemed like a pretty great decade for music with the exception of the very early and latter part of the decade. 1991, 1995, and '98 are my personal favorites on this list. The charts seemed to be dominated by Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, and Janet Jackson throughout most of the decade.

One thing though what you'll notice is a sharp dropoff in quanity starting in 1992, due to Billboard starting Soundscan as a new method for calculating the charts. Just look at 1994, just seven songs topped the charts! Compare that to 1974-75 when 35 songs hit the top! Due to this reason, I prefer yearly Top 100 lists over #1's, especially since the 1990s. Even with that said, you'll find that rock didn't quite have the presence as it did from the '60s-'80s. Grunge never had a #1 hit and while 1990-91 had a couple Hair Metal leftovers and of course some Adult Contemporary Soft Rock along with the Teen Pop movement, I find that the '90s was dominanted by R&B, Hip Hop, some dance-pop like C&C Music Factory and the Macarena, and some Latin pop in 1999. I like 1991, 1993, and 1996 the most out of this list.

My favorites are the years 1995 through 1998.
