@Howard: in this case, I think he means movies that share the same type of plot lines/plot points.
Mischevious kid outwits burglars with homemade traps (Home Alone, 3 Ninjas, Problem Child, etc.)
second on Natural Disaster movies (Twister, Dante's Peak, Volcano)
Asteroid hits planet type of movies (Deep Impact and Armageddon)
the start of big screen adaptations of old tv shows (Beverly Hillbillies, Little Rascals, Car 54 Where Are You, McHales Navy, Sgt. Bilko)
Adaptations of Fairy tales/Myths into animated features (Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, etc.)
slacker comedy (Wayne's World, Bill and Ted, Airheads, Clerks, Mallrats)
1970's period pieces (Boogie Nights, 54, Dazed and Confused, Detroit Rock City, Son of Sam)
Shakespeare adaptations
The Gross out Comedy had a renaissance during this period

Blank Check (1994) was one of my favorite "Home Alone" inspired movies.

The film 'Slacker' by Richard Linklater from 1991 fits the bill. A wonderful little independent film about people trying to find their identity and meaning in the world...Here is the full film from Youtube. :)
