Subject: Is there anyone else who doesn't want a Grunge revival?

Written By: nintieskid999 on 09/10/14 at 7:24 pm

A lot of teenagers seem to want it but post grunge has lasted as long as it did. Now people want a grunge revival and teens are trying to be "Soft Grunge". They probably think that type of music was last heard in 1994 because they were listening to Radio Disney in the 00s.

I don't want one, but if it was kind of acoustic-tinged I wouldn't mind.

I really want a jangle pop revival too.

How about a unheard of rock style, rock has run out of ideas, that's why many believe it's dead.

Even the "indie" bands are extremely derivative and unoriginal, just rehashes and regurgitations.

That's true, isn't it? Like a 13 year old kid who's a classic rock fan now (which would include Nirvana and the early 90s original grunge) might not even realize how there were those sh*tty third rate post-grunge bands like Shinedown as recently as a few years ago in 2009.  ;D

Post-grunge pervading for so long kinda throws off the whole nostalgia cycle too. I've only noticed the 90s coming back in some fashion, but even that's been modernized (i.e. brighter neon flannel, as opposed to the lumberjack style of the original 90s).

So would I. :) It seems like they've been trying to have one since 2004 (i.e. The Killers, Postal Service kinda alternative, heavier new wavey rock) but its never managed to break through full steam, probably because of too much hip hop influence.

I think the power pop/pop rock of the early-mid 2000s was already kind of an "80s revival". People seem to forget all about it, but it was huge. I'm surprised nobody remembers it. Here is a link explaining 2000s music: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000s_in_music Go to the North America section and read the rock section, it'll refresh your memory.

If post grunge had instead ended in 2000, how do you think things would be different?

Hmm good question, I think rock would've kept evolving even now, and (even if rap was HUGE circa 2004 and still probably would've been) would've at least co-existed with the other music for longer. One reason imo there's probably so much electronic or hip hop styled music and almost no guitar rock since 2009/10 is a backlash against the watered down, lousy post-grungy rock of most of the 00s.

I guess (though you could say this about any genre of music when its current) because it was all over pop culture and the radio every two seconds between 2001 and 2008. For why I personally didn't like it, it seemed bland/boring and kept the same tempo and sound throughout almost every song.

In a way it was way grungier than actual grunge. Like Nirvana's Nevermind was actually kinda power pop mixed with punk and hard rock, and far catchier to me.

There was some good late period Post-Grunge, but yeah, most of it royally blew. And this is coming from someone who was once a pretty big fan. If you look at the rock charts, there's actually alot of those groups (like Seether and Three Days Grace for example) still lingering in the top 100, but I think that's largely a result of the fact that most kids under the age of 20 don't even listen to new rock anymore anyway, meaning that us "geezers" who grew up with the '00s Post-Grunge are still keeping it afloat.

If there ever really is a true Grunge "revival" then I really do hope that it's in the mold of the early Sup Pop stuff like Mudhoney and The Pixies.

You make a good point I forgot about! Whenever I've brought up to many people how sad it is that rock is dead, they always point out how well CDs by 60s-early 2000s bands like Foo Fighters still chart. And my feeling is that the vast majority of people buying them (online or physically) are the over 25 or over 30 fans who originally grew up with it, so its not as relevant as a 14 year old doing so.

And yeah, if there's a 90s music revival in general I hope its with stuff that's become forgotten...like the adult contemporary/soft rock, and those lesser known alternative bands too.

I hope it's something along the lines of Spacehog and Sister Hazel with the songs "In the Meantime" (glam rock) and "All For You" (southern rock). Both are also alternative rock.

I could see stuff like that being big in the 2020's after EDM dies down. After years of Rap(Glam, Snap, and Ringtone),  Electro-pop, and EDM maybe people wanting something more authentic sounding.

As much as I love grunge, I don't think there's anything new to do with the genre. Post-grunge was the prime choice in rock until about 2009, so how would we make it post-post-grunge?
We need a new rock movement, something that changes things and brings rock back into the mainstream.

I love Soundgarden to death but I fail to see how a grunge revival would give us fresh music.

I agree. Post-grunge has been done to death and I think that a new conscious revival of grunge would lack the authenticity that made it interesting and memorable in the first place.

I agree with this very much. We had almost 20 years of grungy rock so it's literally been done to death...this might be one reason rock went basically extinct in 2010. Even the "rock bands" like Maroon 5 are pretty much guitarless now! ;D

I'd really love a rock revival with indie music. I've said this before but a blend of today's pop music with some guitar rock edge would sound amazing imo.
