Subject: Video Games: 1990
Written By: Visor765 on 05/28/14 at 10:01 pm
Since people talk about music, I'm going to start a series of threads about video games!
Okay, so in 1990, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was released to stores. The American version looks like this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/31/SNES-Mod1-Console-Set.jpg/640px-SNES-Mod1-Console-Set.jpg
Super Mario World was a launch title released with the system: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/32/Super_Mario_World_Coverart.png
And don't forget F-Zero! https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/21/F-Zero.jpg
And that's pretty much all I have to say. I can't find too many notable releases around this year, but next year something revolutionary happens.

The Super Nintendo was released in 1990 in Japan. The american version wasnt released until next year. However, I like the controller with the color buttons.

Since there was no Super NES yet in North America, Sega was all about getting ahead:

But I still felt that the NES was superior to anything offered due to the big output of games being offered. It was truly the year of the great follow-up sequel. You had Castlevania III, Mega Man 3, Ninja Gaiden II, Contra 2, Double Dragon III, Adventure Island II, TMNT II (the Arcade Game which is the game that came out on the NES that year), and of course SMB3. There were also other great games such as Chip N' Dale Rescue Ragers and challenging ones such as Silver Surfer. Nintendo never had a greater share of the video game market then around then as the Atari 7800 had faded by then and Sega was still looking for its killer app. Sadly due to budget constraints like most, I only had SMB3 and the second TMNT game.

These year by year threads for video games may not get the response you want. People who played video games in the 90s don't generally know the year the were released

When I was really young, I'm talking like 3-6 years old, I used to play this Mickey Mouse game for Sega Genesis which I believe came out in 1990...though it was later in the '90s when I was actually playing it.

The one that instantly comes to mind is Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse

Doesn't matter. I don't really care about how many responses I get anyway. And besides, if someone doesn't remember when a video game was released, they can just look it up on the Wikipedia.

Wow. Harsh! Not everyone is going to want to go to all that trouble just to post in a thread.

I'm sorry, did that come off as rude to you? I didn't mean it in a harsh way. If I could speak on the internet with my texts, I would have said it in a neutral tone.

That's kind of true. Games were in stores for several years and it was normal to play early 90s Games aß late as 1997.

Yes, despite Sega's hope that they could outsell Nintendo during the holiday season, 1990 completely belonged to the NES for several reasons:
1. Many people (read: parents, who had to buy the consoles for their kids in a time when video games were overwhelmingly still played by kids) still didn't quite yet get the concept of the every couple of year console upgrade that is standard today. I remember seeing an old news report on YouTube from 1991 about the SNES being released in America, and the sentiment of most of the parents interviewed seemed to be, "I just got one of these Nintendo thingies for my kid the other year, why do I have to get another one at full price now!"
2. In early 1990, "Super Mario Bros. 3" came to America in what might still be the most hyped game release of all time. It sold 20 million copies as a stand alone title, which was the record until "GTA: San Andreas" came out in 2004.
3. As you mentioned, the NES. despite the lack of horsepower when compared to the Genesis, just had a far better slate of games, which at the end of the day is all most gamers really care about.
All in all, NES sales actually peaked in 1989, but were still strong in 1990 as the console sold about 8 million units that calendar year. I don't have any hard numbers on the Genesis from '90, but I'm fairly certain it sold considerably less than 8 million units.
