Subject: 1992: The Year in Music
Written By: XYkid on 11/03/13 at 1:32 am
This is probably one of my favourite years of the 90s for music, and just in general.
To start off, I have the song Them Bones, from the group Alice in Chains. This came off of their biggest selling album Dirt, which helped propel them into the mainstream.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTuD8k3JvxQ
Another favourite of mine, Sophie B. Hawkins major hit Damn I wish I was your lover, one of the most beautiful and sexiest songs of the 90s, if not all time. It peaked at #5 on the Hot 100.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQQpbRN1FrE
Finally, from the hit girl group of the early 90s, we have one from En Vogue. A great song with a great message, Free Your Mind.

Here's one that I really like from that year...
"Am I The Same Girl" by Swing Out Sister:

Throughout, it incorporates the instrumental classic "Soulful Strut" (popularized in the 60s by the band Young-Holt Unlimited).

Easily one of my favourite albums of all time, and one of the most underrated albums of the decade, if not entirely.
I have so many fond memories of my mother playing that album throughout my childhood.

This reminds me of Radio X, the radio station from GTA: San Andreas. The story of the game takes place in 1992, and it gives a good snap shot of the rock music of the time.

That's cool. I was twelve years old then and wasn't actively listening to music stations at the time, but that song is one that I can remember, and my mom seemed to like listening to it in the car.

In 1992, Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers released their debut album Generation Terrorists and it produced 6 singles into the UK Top 40 charts. If you don't know who this band is, that is because they never quite took off in North America. Didn't stop me from listening, and I am still a fan. Here are two of those hits from that album, plus one that was a single only release ...

"Ain't No Doubt" is a popular song by Jimmy Nail. Composed by Nail with Guy Pratt, Danny Schogger and Charlie Dore, the song features additional vocals by Sylvia Mason-James. Six years after his debut album, Nail revived his singing career during the success of his television drama series Spender. The single peaked at No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in July 1992, spending two weeks at the top of the chart.

In 1992, the hard rock band Ugly Kid Joe included a cover of Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle" on their debut album America's Least Wanted. The cover was issued as a single in 1993 and peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, the group's highest ever position on that chart. The song also peaked at number three on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Chapin's and Ugly Kid Joe's singles were both certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

"One Step Out of Time", written and composed by Paul Davies, Tony Ryan, and Victor Stratton, was the United Kingdom's entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1992, performed by Michael Ball. At the end of judging that evening, "One Step Out of Time" took the second-place slot with 139 points. Before Eurovision, the song débuted and peaked at #20 on the UK Singles Chart, and stayed in the chart for 7 weeks.

"Over the Rainbow" (often referred to as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow") is a classic Academy Award-winning ballad, with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg. It was written for the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz.
Eva Cassidy recorded a version of the song for the 1992 Chuck Brown/Eva Cassidy album The Other Side. After Cassidy's death in 1996, the song was included in her posthumously-released compilation album Songbird, released in 1998 and was released as a CD single in 2001. This version was popularised by the BBC on BBC Radio 2 and on the television show Top of the Pops 2; the latter featured a video recording of Cassidy performing the song. This publicity helped push sales of the compilation album Songbird to #1 in the UK charts. Eva Cassidy's unique rendition of "Over the Rainbow" was selected by the BBC in the UK for their Songs of the Century album in the year 1999. Cassidy's performance of "Over the Rainbow" at Blues Alley was published for the first time in January 2011 on her Simply Eva album.

"Too Much Love Will Kill You" is a song written by British guitarist Brian May of Queen, Frank Musker, and Elizabeth Lamers. The song reflected the breakdown of May's first marriage and attraction to his future wife, Anita Dobson. It was first recorded by Queen around 1988 or before, and was intended to be on the band's The Miracle album in 1989, but did not make the cut due to legal disputes following the band's decision that all songs on the album would be written by the group as oppose to individuals. After Freddie Mercury's death in 1991, May arranged a solo version, which he performed at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992, and subsequently included on his solo album Back to the Light that same year. Released as a single, it reached No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart. Because it was first played publicly at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, a common misconception is that it was written as a tribute to Freddie Mercury, although it had actually been written several years before he died.

"Hazard" is a 1992 hit song written and performed by American singer/songwriter/producer Richard Marx. It peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number 6 in the Cash Box charts. In addition, the song was Marx's third number 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. Internationally, it topped charts in 13 countries throughout the world, hitting number 1 in Australia and number 3 in the United Kingdom. The song was to be made into a film, but some how, it got lost in production.

"Against the Wind" is Máire Brennan's first solo single, taken from her 1992 album Máire. Two covers were made available, one with a sand pattern and the title of the single, the other with a photograph by Tim Jarvis, of Máire and three dancers, superimposed on the sand pattern. A promotional video directed by the Douglas Brothers was made to accompany the single.
Moya is the eldest of nine children. She has four sisters, Deirdre, Eithne (better known as Enya), Olive and Brídín, and four brothers, Ciarán, Pól, Leon and Bartley. She sang along with her siblings in the family pub, Leo's Tavern in the village of Meenaleck, a short distance from the family home.

Yes.. that one is notable for sampling of the Clash’s 1982 hit “Should I Stay Or Should I Go?”, which Mick Jones (frontman for Big Audio Dynamite) sang lead on. So he was basically paying homage to one of his previous band’s songs.

This one never made it out of Canada, which is a shame because it was very well received in Canada, where it peaked at #11. It has kind of an Enigma vibe and you wouldn't know it from this song, but in the 80s, Haywire had several popular rock hits in Canada.

I may have mentioned this one before (I am too lazy to look) but here is the song Walk Away by Alanis Morrissette, who was credited simply as Alanis. It is a dance-pop single that peaked at #35 in Canada the last week of January 1992, and while it was not a hit outside of Canada, it can be heard in the film Problem Child 2
The video features actors Yannick Bisson (Murdoch Mysteries) and Matt LeBlanc (Friends), the latter who plays Alanis' boyfriend, which seems a little creepy as at the time, he was 23 and she was 16. I remember this song very well and I still remember being super disappointed when she gave up the dance-pop sound and switched to rock lol

Probably from sporting events. Most people only know the beginning part, the instrumental that follows "Are you ready for this?" If I'm not mistaken I think it was playing during boxing matches after Michael Buffer says his famous phrase, "LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!" I remember it playing on the local FM radio station when it first came out, around this time in 1992 with the full lyrics.
I remember this one as well around the same time of the same genre but probably most don't:

^ You’re probably right. In fact, I was just now reading the Wiki entry about the song: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_Ready_for_This
And it says that the song was recorded in 1991 (which I suspected) and was popular in Europe shortly thereafter. But the US seemed to get it as a hand-me-down. (Even so, I remember hearing it on the radio regularly in late 1994.)
