Subject: 1990: The Year In Music
Written By: XYkid on 10/29/13 at 7:43 pm
In honour of the trend Whistledog started in the 1980s forums, I thought I would follow up by doing a similar series for the 1990s.
I would like to start this one off with two well known dance hits that came to be some of the most defining dance tracks of the decade. One by Snap!, a German dance group. Their song The Power was released at the very start of the year. Their single reached #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #1 in the UK.

Later in the year, American dance group C+C Music Factory released their smash hit Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) which topped the Hot 100 at #1 and #3 in the UK.

In 1989, Polish singer Basia released her 2nd solo album London Warsaw New York. The lead single titled Crusing For Bruising became a BIG hit in early 1990. Still love this song alot!

In 1990, Aaron Neville and his brothers recorded a cover of the 1969 Leonard Cohen song Bird on the Wire. Their version was re-titled Bird on A Wire to be released on the soundtrack to the film of the same name starring Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn. The song failed to reach the US Hot 100, but it was a Top 40 hit in Canada and is my favourite cover of a Canadian song of all time.

Keeping on with the hippy UK movement, I think the Happy Mondays made a small impact on the US charts. I used to wear baggy flares, CND chains and psychedelic hooded tops back in 1990.

(not to be confused with Extreme's "More Than Words")
"Price of Love" - Bad English

"How Can We Be Lovers?" - Michael Bolton

"I Don't Have the Heart" - James Ingram

Hold On - Wilson Phillips
I know this song.
I remember Wilson-Phillips too (the band members were children of 60s music acts). That one was a huge hit. Their follow-up single, "Release Me" began climbing the charts in the latter part of the summer, and another track, "You're In Love" would peak in early 1991 or thereabouts.

I dated a guy who loved Wilson-Phillips. Sadly, I can't listen to them without thinking about him. They also had a song called "Give it up" in 1992 that was a fun dance track.

He and the rest of the band are going to be in Alberta for some shows and then it's on holliday untill the New Year and the Aniversary tour. :) His friends and I have this inside joke about how Dan should run for Mayor of Toronto but he wouldn't be able to do that unless he puts drumming aside. The anniversary of Kenny's passing is coming up soon. When I look back on how devistated Mark Holmes was when Kenny passed away it got me thinking about things. He was really quite vulnerable and he still is very vulnerable.

In 1989, Alannah Myles released her self-titled debut album. In America, she became a BIG star in 1990 with the singles Love Is and Black Velvet, which had previously been hits for her in Canada in 1989 (see 1989: The Year in Music for those). Two more singles from the album were released and did well in Canada right here in 1990, but she had no further success in the States. All 4 singles are still heard to this day on Canadian radio!

I think the explosion of house music is the major difference between 1990 and the 80s in terms of music. Though some of it was breaking through in 1989, like "Pump Up The Jam".

I'd probably say most (maybe two thirds?) of the music that was a hit in 1990 was recorded or at least written in 1988 or 89. The same can be said about any year though of course. The music from the late part of the year though, is probably mostly from 1990.

"Give a Little Love Back to the World", written and composed by Paul Curtis, was the United Kingdom's entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1990, performed by Emma. At the age of 15, Emma was the youngest-ever entrant on behalf of the United Kingdom at Eurovision. At the end of judging that evening, "Give a Little Love Back to the World" took the sixth-place slot with 87 points. After Eurovision, the song placed at No. 33 on the UK Singles Chart, in the best chart placing by a UK Eurovision act since 1984.

Me too. I was 14 when this song was released so I was pretty impressed that Donnie, a white kid from Dorchester, could rap like that.
