It really gets under my skin when people say that pop metal and hard rock was "killed" in the 90s. For about the first four years of the decades, it was one of the most popular genres.:

It could have maintained that level of popularity (though it would have had to have shared the spotlight with alt. rock and grunge) if the record labels had continued to promote more than just a handful of bands.
