Subject: 90s songs you thought were 80s
Written By: belmont22 on 12/19/12 at 11:07 am
What are some songs from the 90s you think sound like they were made in the 80s? I'm mostly talking about songs from say 1993 onwards by the way since obviously a lot of early 90s tunes are going to sound a lot like 80s music.
I'll start with a few.

Uhm... I hate to get nitpicky, but the Corrs' "Breathless" is actually early 2000s.
Some songs I thought fit this category (particularly since some of these artists released most of their material in 80s):
"Kiss Them For Me" by Siouxsie & The Banshees ('91)
"Break It Down Again" by Tears For Fears ('93)
"Policy Of Truth" by Depeche Mode ('90, although its album was recorded before then, so it kinda makes sense in that regard)
"Just Another Dream" by Cathy Dennis ('91)

Yeah, most 1990-92 songs could have just as easily been made in the late 80s so I think mid 90s onwards is fair.
Secret Garden by Bruce Springsteen, definitely has that 80s vibe even though it was a 1995 song

When You Love a Woman by Journey, hard to believe Journey had a hit in 1996

"(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" -- Bryan Adams (1991)
"To Be With You" -- Mr. Big (1992)

Breathless - by the Corrs?
That's MY teenage song and it was released and recorded in 2000. How can you associate it with the 80s at all :o
It's not even 90s! That song is S C R E A M I N G Year-2000 8) 8)
I go for Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence

It was recorded in 1989, released in 1990 and could easily go for 1983.
I know that it's not really what you were looking for, but I picked this because it's a 90s song that sounds even older than the late 80s.

Bloodhound Gang - Bad Touch (1999), also one of my teenage songs, is a synth pop song and therefore sounds 80s at some points.

I guess it's those synths and the general bubblyness of the song. I included it because I'm pretty sure it was at least recorded in 1999.
The fact you were already 14 in 2000 makes me realize that you're a little bit older than me. When I was 14, the big songs were "Hey Ya" by OutKast and "My Immortal" by Evanescence, to name a couple. Seems quite a bit more recent though those songs even would seem "old" to a current teenager born in 1997.

Hair metal was still alive and well in 1990, so there was "Cherry Pie" by Warrant, "Unskinny Bop" by Poison and Winger's "In the Heart of the Young" album 8-P ;D. Van Halen's "F.U.C.K." album (1991), Kiss's "Revenge" album (1992), and Def Leppard's "Adrenalize" (1992) still have a quasi-hair metal sound.
Also "Baby Baby" by Amy Grant and "Promise of a New Day" by Paula Abdul, both from 1991. Sound like they could be from 1987.

"Wind Of Change" by Scorpions, which was a hit in the early 90's, could easily be mistaken as pre-1990 due to the fact that the band had most of its hits in 80s.
I thought that Jouney song came out in the mid 80's.
"When You Love a Woman"? Yeah, it does have that sound to it. And it was Journey's "comeback" hit, with all the original members reunited. But their comeback was short-lived, it seems. :-\\
