Subject: Why was the 90's Obsessed with Saxophones!
Written By: thenewtattoo on 10/16/12 at 11:46 pm
Anyone notice in songs they had alot of sax parts.
Even in sitcoms like Full House & Boy meets world the interlude scenes would have a sax playing.
When exactly did the sax die out?

Actually I think the 90's was the decade the sax solo died out. Saxophones were big from the 50's up to the early 90's. They made a bit of a trendy comeback in 2011 though, remember Mr. Saxobeat?

Bill Clinton loved to play on the saxophone iirc.
Also Lisa Simpson played the Sax too and the Simpsons were in the prime in the 90s.

I love the way the saxophone sounds. Years ago, when I joined the band, I initially wanted to play the saxophone. However, my band teacher thought I would be more suited for trumpet and thus I ended up playing it instead. XD
It is hard to think of when the saxophone solo phase fizzled out honestly, but this thread reminds me of the song Baker Street.

I thought sax solos were more of an 80s thing...

I think people starting using saxaphones on their electronic pianos instead of back in the 80's people had saxaphone solos which were pretty common back then.

Sax solos are definitely an 80s thing. There's even a blog dedicated to it
http://imacomputa.org/sax/
Like a lot of 80s trends it carried over a bit into the first half of the 90s but really died out as the decade went along. You'll notice some big early 90s hits still have sax solos though, like 'I Will Always Love You' or 'I Swear'.

then after that it completely died out.

When I think of saxophones, I don't think of the 90s at all. No one was obsessed with saxophones in that era?

Remember that sweet sax solo in that Gangsta Rap song?
Or how about that beautiful sax solo in that depressing grunge song?
I can think of 2 songs that were BIG hits that relied heavily on the use of a sax: Lily Was Here by Dave Stewart/Candy Dulfer and I've Got Mine by Glenn Frey. That being said, one of my favourite SAX solos of the 90s is in the hit 'Everybody Gets A Second Chance' by Mike + the Mechanics

And, I think, looked pretty damn cool. 8)
But yeah, I definitely don't think of the 90's when it comes to the saxophone's popularity in popular music. The first decade that comes to mind is the 80's. I believe the saxophone was on life support by the very late 80's/early 90's and officially died out by the mid 90's. Trying to think of other 90's hits that featured the saxophone and only this one comes to mind at the moment:

As a person who loves loves LOVES the saxophone, I have really enjoyed its comeback in the past year or so in songs like Last Friday Night by Katy Perry, Mr. Saxobeat by Alexandra Stan, Burning by Mia Martina and Midnight City by M83. Wish I knew how to play it.

I think they were using electric pianos.

There were quite a few other hit songs in the 1990-94 period with sax.
The only big hit song in the late 90s that I can think of that even had a little saxophone in it was 'I'll Be' by Edwin McCain.
