Subject: I can't believe I wore that!
Written By: Katluver on 10/02/12 at 1:55 am
While I have a soft spot for this decade (it was my generation after all), I will admit that some of the fashion was atrocious, and I'll admit that I did my fair share in following the latest trends back in the day. ::)
Some of the items that I wasted my money on:
-overalls (Okay if working on a farm, but just not feminine at all. And to top it off, I practically lived in this attire. ::)
What's really strange is that some of the boys liked me in them...go figure)
-clunky shoes (Same as above. They care no $ex appeal)
-and onto more shoes....platform slides (I'm barely 5'5 so I wanted to appear taller but these were just awkward looking)
-and last but not least....vinyl baby-pink platform MARY-JANES (that I got when I visited England back in '95. I though they were the coolest shoes ever, but when I went back to the other side of the pond, people were laughing at them!)

I wore many hideous outfits in the 1990's, but my mom forced me to wear many of these.
1. Mismatched clothes and clashing color combinations
2. Stirrup pants (I hated these so much.)
3. Overalls
4. Floral leggings
5. Tacky vintage dresses with abuse of lace around the neckline (Yuck!)
Thankfully, I don't dress like this at all anymore.

I think aside from the overdoing of tattoos and body piercings, late 2000's and early 2010's fashion is much better than anything from 1980-2004. I think 80's, 90's and early 00's fashion were all equally tacky in their own way actually. 80's was too excessive, I love it but I admit it's crap for the most part, 90's was too casual, and looked really redneck and unsophisticated, and early 00's was too low-brow, always trying to imitate the ghetto or look very revealing.
My ideal pop culture world would be like 1980's music with 2010's clothing and hairstyles.

Oh goodness me... stirrup pants lol. I think every girl had a pair or two back then. I still don't see what the idea was for the straps under the foot and the tapered ankle.

I wore clashing colors too---I had a whole colection of colored jeans so I would experiment. One time I wore my royal blue jeans with a hot pink sweater! 8-P
Other items:
-purple jelly sandals
-a baby tee under a cotton spaghetti strap dress
-pacifier necklaces
-bell bottom jeans

Oh God! Stirrup pants! I almost forgot about those! Not sure if I ever wore those, but I definitely remember seeing my mom wear those often. I know for sure though that wore lots of overalls back then. I distinctly remember wearing these bright yellow overall shorts which, I believe, came with a matching yellow hat. In my defense, I was a kid back then so... :P

Did the jelly shoe fad extend into the 90's?

Yes, it did somewhat. I owned a pair.

Jelly shoes were revived in the late '90s, but I think not many girls wore them. I was a teenager in the '90s and remember every shoe fad there was. I don't remember jelly shoes being a very popular fad throughout most of the decade. Whenever I see jelly shoes it just takes me back to my childhood in the '80s. I had various pairs then.

Being a teenaged girl and a big fan of New Kids On The Block I can show you what I was wearing before the poularity of that band died down. :)
Here we go.
This is me at 16 years old in my New Kids On The Block t-shirt complemented nicely by my black oversized pants and black socks and my Joe McIntyre styled hair.
LOL! One of the things that I used to do from age 14 onwards was go to the hair salon and get my hair cut into that Shroom cut like Joe had. I got teased about it terribly by people who just didn't think but hey I was a teenager, the Kids were very popular, and I had a crush on him. :)

I remember when those were popular as well. I think I owned a pair myself.

Not everyone liked them, they were nice to look at and that was it. I remember getting injured various times because of my jelly shoes lol.

I can't find a pic but when I was a kid in the 90s I had these white gym shoes that had like this blue/green metallic goo stuff in the toes. All the kids in 1st grade wanted to press on them to watch the goo change color! Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

New Kids On The Block had some hits in the 90's.

Yes they did. :) But after they changed their manager and their image their popularity sort of wained and that's when they broke up. Pherhaps for the betterment of themselves. They came back 4 years ago and they so they sound better than ever. Although I would have thought the one who had tremendous stage fright would be the hardest to convince to come back but that's not so because it was one of the divorced daddies that needed the most convincing to come back. :)

I'm sure a lot of people who look back to the 70s and 80s pics from their teens and grade school days think this. ;D

The winter jacket I bought in 1996; bright lime green on the outside, canary yellow on the inside (also visible when looking at the hood - sadly). Long, wide and lacking any kind of fit. Two winters long, I looked like a fool, without knowing it.
But maybe even worse: the luminous pink legging from the early 90s. Really neon and made from shiny lycra. I wore it with a huge t-shirt; again, lacking any kind of fit.

Omigosh, was yours reversible?! I remember getting this reversible shapeless puffy coat in late '92 that I could either wear in turquoise or in lavendar. I remember wanting to get one of those plaid coats that were trendy at the time but my mom kept insisting for me to get the puffy coat; she probably believed that it was more practical since the winters can get very cold where I grew up, and that I had "two coats for the price of one". :P

No, not reversible. Thankfully (I can imagine my fifteen year old self showing the yellow side...). :P
