My dad was working at the Flea Market in the mid 90s and we used to be near an arcade/video game shop.  There were people selling Playstation but there were also games out for SNES and Sega.  I remember when Mortal Kombat Trilogy came out and it was like 45 dollars for the PS while Mortal Kombat 4(almost the same game) was close to 70 dollars.  I am glad companies got rid of the hard plastic video games.

By '96 all the 32/64 bit systems were out...so I'd say 1996.

1996.  PS1 and Saturn had already been out for a year by then and had by that point started racking up sales (well, the PS1 did at least).  Then the N64 came out.  A glance at some old game magazines I have from 1996 show a very heavy focus on 3D gaming by mid-1996.

Well the playstation came out, nd the sega saturn. Nintendo still had the snes and the very expensive 3do system came out. I know where to get a 3do system but know nothing about it.

I would have to say 1997 cause that's when it was close to the start of The Playstation era.

also the whole Pepsi generation Next campaign really fit in with 1997 being a new year for music.

I would definitely say 1996 as that was also the year PC games made the transition from 16 to 32 bit under Windows 95.  By 1997 the 32-bit era was in full swing.

Spice Girls were big in the UK in 1996 but in the US it was right at the beginning of '97, though if you were an Anglophile you might have well heard of them prior.

Super Nintendo was probably relatively cheap in '97 compared to the N64.  Playstation was the cool kid's toy though.  Most of my friends loved the Playstation and hated the N64.  The selection of games was entirely different though as it wasn't like today where Xbox360 and PS3 both have pretty much the same games.

Well, the 16-bit era ended for me in the summer of 1998 when I got my last ever 2D game (NFL '98 on the Genesis) as a birthday gift.

As a whole, I think the answer is a bit trickier. Though 1995 saw the launch of both the Saturn and PS1, it was still a massive year for 16-bit titles, mostly because of how terrible early 32-bit software was. I think the release of Super Mario 64 in 1996 was really a pivotal moment in gaming history. It proved that 3D gaming, as a medium, could work.

To me the 16-Bit era ended in 1996 when I got Ps1 for christmas. My friends all had ps1 and only a few people in my class had the n64. Since my parents were divorced, i eventually got an n64 so in reality im really lucky i got the best of both worlds.

My full-time job is nursemaiding a dire bit of 16-bit software that for some reason is (well, probably was by now, but still more than enough to pay my salary) the nation's favourite in its genre

Did it ever die? I still play my Genesis or SNES from time to time :D

But for me personally, I suppose in 1997 when my mom bought my brother and I a Nintendo 64.

Basically it would be the jump from N64 and PS1 up to PS2, Xbox, Wii, etc. Though then again, there have been multiple game gens in the past 11 years I just don't know much about them.  ;D
