Subject: 90s websites
Written By: Ryan112390 on 08/27/12 at 11:49 am
Anyone think that the websites of the mid-late 90s have a very nostalgic look to them, looking back now? A simplistic, colorful, very artsy sort of appearance?

I don't have a mid 90s example. But one of my very first sites (made in fall 2000) is on the right side of the huge pic collection below.
It was made with Frontpage 2000. Very representative for early 00s site design, that one, you only have to add a Geocities banner...

These pretty much remind me on the sites that I have created. I have been providing websites that looked like this until about 2004.

Does anybody remember expages? XD
I remember having several websites through that engine in about 1999.

After my previous posting I realized suddenly I had made printscreens of an old 2 Unlimited fansite, last updated in 1997, about 5 years ago. Before that site would disappear (nowadays, it isn't online anymore).
I've found them back, and uploaded them. Have fun with it :)

Yes, that's how a lot of non-professional sites looked even well into the early 2000's. Those remind me of my first web-experiences in 2000.

In 1997, that's how the professional web sites looked. People were using Netscape 3.something or Netscape 4.08, or IE 3.0 or IE 4.0.

I guess so. Not too long ago I have checked some sites on the web archive (archive.org).

That 2 Unlimited site was an unprofessional fansite.
But here's a screenshot from the splash page (very common back than, splash pages...) of a PROFESSIONAL site, from late 1996. TMF was our Dutch alternative for MTV, really big here.
In reality, the Christmas lightning was an animated gif, constantly changing from colour...

And this was the splash page of the site of the 'Netherlands Public Broadcasting', in 1996. Was one of the most important sites here. It still is, but http://www.publiekeomroep.nl looks a little bit different nowadays. ;D

We didn't internet untill 2001. But looking at some sites from the early 00s do seem very old. And that was only 10-13 years ago. I used internet wayback.

Only?
That's an extremely long time for technology. Just go back 13 years and check what was available 13 years from then (1999 vs. 1986) ;D

There was computer usage before 2001.
