I used to hear the 1990 hit 'Say A Prayer' by Breathe on the radio all the time, but now whenever the radio stations play Breathe, it's mostly their 80s offerings. I still say this was their greatest song ...

"The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" by Morrissey (1994)
"No Myth" by Michael Penn (1990)
"Wishing I Was There" by Natalie Imbruglia (1998) (the follow-up single to "Torn", which was a much bigger hit)
"You'll See" by Madonna (1995)

Also, "Between You And Me" by DC Talk (billed in some sources as "Just Between You And Me"), which hit the charts in late 1996.

You will be hearing some of these soon as '90s music moves into "oldies" territory over the next decade now that the '80s incorporation into the "oldies canon" is basically complete and the "20 years ago" now places us in the early '90s. But I'd haven't heard most '90s Mariah Carey songs on the radio except for Hero for quite some time despite being commercially the biggest selling act of that decade. It shows how fractured pop music was that decade. Celine Dion? Forget her as well.

I have HD radio, and I know here in Florida the 80s station is gone :( along with the supplemental radio stations...such as 97X Grunge Channel, Classic Rock Station(which plays a lot of obscure rock songs), and a general alternative channel. IT sucks because lately there has been more and more of the electronic music crap that is getting popular today.

It was a big hit on the R&B charts in the summer of 1995; it continued to be played on "pop" stations through the end of the year. This group turned out to be a one-hit wonder.

With the exception of It Must Have Been Love you never hear any of Roxette's other hit songs on the radio anymore. They're still a great band! I've always been a fan of theirs from the first time I heard them and I own all of their cds. OK, so The Look actually was a hit in America in 1989 but so what! 8) It's a shame they lost popularity here in America but Per Gessle says he feels their record company EMI hasn't given them the proper support over here for a long time now. Which I agree with because they've kept having hit songs all over the world in other countries since then.

I'm actually surprised this isn't played more often. It was the 2nd best selling single of 1995 and it won a Grammy. I tend to hear "Waterfalls" more often over this.

Same here; the radio played it a LOT during late 1994/early 1995 since that's when it was a big hit. I guess "Waterfalls" was a bigger hit. Two other tracks from that album (CrazySexyCool) that were hits were "Red Light Special" and "Diggin' On You", neither of which I seem to hear much of anymore. :-\\

I hear both of those on the radio too! (I live in the greater Los Angeles area.) However, "Fly" probably still gets way more airplay. Sugar Ray also had a few hits in the early 2000s such as "Falls Apart" and "Answer The Phone" (which might've disappeared from playlists a long time ago) as well as "When It's Over" (which does get played).

that's interesting.
There aren't too many stations that I know of that play absolutely no pre-1990 music... although there is one such station near me. They used to play 90s and 2000s songs only, but chances are they may have dropped their 90s songs by now. (IOW, they only play 00s and 10s songs.)

Tina Turner's " I don't want to fight no more." This was the song she wrote for her autobiographical movie. It was a very popular track in 1993 when I was in the third grade. Radio stations played it well into the late 90s but I haven't heard it on the radio since the 2000s began. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoNXsne8exg

As far as songs that have "Stayed in the 90s" are concerned this is certainly one of them. It was popular in 95 and was rarely played very much after that.

such a good song.
It's actually called "I Don't Wanna Fight" and it still gets played periodically on stations that have a lot of soft-pop songs on their playlist. Her earlier stuff also gets played on such stations.

Lots of songs mentioned here are in the database of my radio station, lol. :D
How much is 2 Unlimited - No limit (back then number 1 in about 40 countries) played, nowadays? Almost never. But back in 1993, when it was such a huge hit, it didn't get that much airplay already. It was played from time to time, but nothing more than that.
The follow-up 'Tribal dance' was a smaller hit, but was at the same time EVERYWHERE, airplay wise. And is still played from time to time (I'm talking about the situation here in The Netherlands). Same goes for No one. Those songs are simply more radio friendly.

^ And in the U.S., 2 Unlimited had a big hit in the mid-1990's entitled "Get Ready For This", which one radio station in the Los Angeles area seemed to play the heck out of... but not so much 15+ years later.
I guess different countries have different songs in their playlist databases...

Haven't heard these in quite a while (all were big hits over here):
Knockin' Boots - Candyman
O Fortuna - Fortuna feat. Satenig*
It Keeps Raining - Bitty McLean
Captain Jack - Captain Jack
Hava Naquila - Party Animals
Drill Instructor - Captain Jack
Aquarius - Party Animals
Tell Him - Barbra Streisand & Celine Dion
Best Friend - Toy Box
If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time - R. Kelly
I guess some songs DO age pretty quick! :-\\
* There's a perfectly good reason why you don't hear this anymore: it features heavy sampling from Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" and was banned, following a lawsuit by his heirs.

There was a brief time (and I'm pretty sure it was the 90s) when Gregorian chants ruled the airwaves - the main exponent being studio group Enigma, whose first LP was mostly made up of it!
You don't hear so much of it now, probably because a whole glut of Gregorian chant LPs seemed to flood the market after this first rush of success!

Yes, their 1990 hit "Sadness Part 1" (also released in some parts of the world as "Sadeness", pronounced as if the first 'e' isn't even there) contained lots of gregorian chants.

This song had a very "religious" theme but I think had that "erotic" early 90's sound and theme. I think it also influenced Madonna's song, Erotic, from the Erotica Album. Whose singles are never heard on the radio today.

"Anything for Love" gets played quite frequently in my parts.
I don't listen to the radio a whole lot, but when I do, these 90s oldies never seem to get played:
"Macarena" by Los Del Rio
"My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion
Any MC Hammer song that doesn't have "Can't" and "Touch" in the title ;)
Any MJ song past the 80s
Most 90s rap (that means no Tupac, Biggie, Kriss Kross, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Vanilla Ice, Dre, Snoop, Salt N Pepa, Coolio, Sean Combs, Run DMC, etc.)
"Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus
Any Hanson song
Disney songs like "A Whole New World" and "Beauty & The Beast" recorded by professional singers (In fact, I'm not sure anybody's played "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" in years)
Blind Melon "No Rain"
The entire Spice Girls catalog
Marcy Playground "Sex & Candy" (In fact, I had never heard of the song until this year)
Less Than Jake feat. Kel "I'm a Dude" from Good Burger
DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince/Will Smith -- entire catalog, especially those movie tie-in themes (Men in Black, Wild Wild West, Nod Ya Head)
Some Madonna songs (but I have heard Material Girl and I think Like a Prayer)
Gary Cherone-era Van Halen (probably for the better!)
Motley Crue's 1990 album w/o Vince Neil
Wilson Phillips
Michael Bolton (except for "When a Man Loves a Woman" and "The Little Drummer Boy")
"Trouble" by Shampoo (from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie)
Tag Team "Whoomp There It Is" or any of its variants
I never hear classic Britney Spears on the radio much anymore
Boy bands (New Kids on the Block, Nsync, The Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, LFO, O-Town, etc.)
Not sure about "I Believe I Can Fly" :-\\
