Subject: Yo-Yos
Written By: joeman on 05/13/11 at 4:46 pm
I remember in the 1998-1999 middle school year, yo-yos made a short comeback and then disappeared after a few months. Anyone had those? I did and used to make a lot of tricks with it, like the walking dog. I also had a glow in a dark yo yo.

I was going to say that I agreed with you because I remember my daughter buying a yo-yo based on some school activity they'd done. Then I remembered she was born in 1998 so there must have been another revival around 2004/05 ;D

Philippine historical records indicate that 16th-century hunters hiding in trees used a rock tied to a cord up to 20 feet in length to throw at wild animals beneath them—the cord enabling retrieval of the rock after missed attempts.
Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary states that the word "yo-yo" derives from the northern Philippine Ilokano language word "yóyo". Many other sources including Panati's Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things say that "yo-yo" was a Tagalog word supposedly meaning "come-come" or "return". It is asserted that the yo-yo was a weapon in the Philippines.

It made a come back in the 80s as well. I still have the Duncan Glow in the Dark yo-yo I bought when I was in high school.

Nice. I didn't realize that the yo-yo trend comes up and down every time period lol. I wouldn't be surprised in a few years kids will play yo-yos again :).

When I was a junior or senior in high school (1988 or 89), yo-yos became a brief fad.
Then our dorkwad principal banned them. ::)

Remember those plastic yo-yos that did all the work for you? That way you never had to worry about the string getting tangled or having to worry about winding it back up. Of course, this also prevented you from walking the dog or around the world tricks LOL
