Subject: How old does this TV look?
Written By: Ryan112390 on 09/08/10 at 5:15 pm
We had this TV from when I was born until around October '93 (when we got a normal modern 90s TV set). I'm just curious--About how old does it look? I don't think TVs still looked like that in the early 90s, I could be wrong.

circa 1980 - 83
I'm trying to see what's going on above the speaker (the area next to the screen) are those push button numbers or is that paper taped to the front of it... It's a little blurry (or my eyesight is worse than I thought ;D ) so I can't quite make it out.
I'm thinking, since it doesn't have knobs it might even be as new as 1985 ;D

Ah, the old push button TV sets, from 1979-1985!
I still don't miss them!
;D

Yep, my grandparents (I think) had one. It was just like those old knob sets; no remote control.

your grandparents must have lost theirs because we had remote controls in the 80s....they probably only had three or four buttons but we had em....

Well, my maternal ones kept changing TV's during the 80's, and my paternal ones kept the same remote-controlled TV since the early 80's until getting rid of it around 1997 or so.

Beacuse this is on the '90s thread, I'd say the architypical '90s TV is basically a "black tube" and very "square" in the early part of the decade, becoming somewhat rounder later in the '90s, with some gray/white tube sets popular in the early '00s just before HDTV took over. As far as the '80s, that is a good example of the early '80s, with the mid-'80s having less wood and gray being a popular color, with the late '80s becoming less gray with black starting to take over, along with just a few Channel Up/Down and Volume Up/Down buttons established, but no Setup/Menu buttons that early '90s TV has.

I'm pretty sure it was posted on the 90s thread because the pic was taken in the 90s

These were our 90s TVs, this was bought around October 1993:

Then this TV with a built in VCR my mother won at her job sometime around '93-95:

There was a third one in my parent's bedroom too around this time, which we had until early '97. It was an older set but had a built in VCR. I broke it by accidently spilling a glass of coke on it.

First TV we had after I was born was a similar Zenith style, though the remote was as thick as a brick, and had a 13 channel memory. When you'd change channels, there would be like a half second of blackness, with a "chhh-k" sound

Ok I looked an old home movie--The set had both a knob/dial (shown at the top) and an inset keypad of sorts. Presumably the dial/knob was for on and off and the keypad was for channels and other functions? I'm not really sure.
What appears to be paper is tape--The front piece must've fallen off or something and they taped the keypad and dial back to the set.
Maybe that could help with the dating?
