Subject: When did you realize the 80's were over/old?

Written By: Todd Pettingzoo on 10/19/09 at 8:19 pm

When did you realize the 80's were over or old?

For me, I started seeing this "Forever 80's" music collection commerical around 1994-1995.

In 1996, MTV aired this show "It came from the 80's". Making fun of and playing tribute to hair metal.

I could be wrong, but it seemed to me, except for hair metal, the 80's wern't mocked all that much, at least until the late 90's. Starting around "The Wedding Singer" in 1998.

Beavis & Butt-Head trashing videos

Honestly, there's many songs and tv shows I wasn't aware were from the '80's until I was in my later teens... (I was born in the mid '80's)  :o

Though I wasn't aware of trends and pop culture until I was around 12/13 by the later part of the '90's

I'd say most people started thinking of it as "another time" around 1994.

I think sometime in 1994 or 1995 actually is when I realized it was another time. I remember when I was freshman in Highschool in 1994-1995 how some of the seniors and juniors were working darker clothes or baggu clothes. When I was in Elementary School and Middle School when I basically went to school for all those years I didn;t notice a fashion change even in my last last year of middle school(1993-1994.) Of course the fashion of 1997-1998  school year was different than that of 1994-mid 1997 school years I think in that the clothes were more colorful probably because of the Puff Daddy late 90's at the time.

I don't know. I was born in '90 and a lot of the movies I watched, games I played, and some of the toys I had, came out in the late 80s. But I've read there was a big backlash to most things 80s around 1994 or 1995.

When I heard "Black Velvet" by Allanah Miles, the first new song I heard in 1990. Putrid!!! I knew there was no turning back and all hope was lost.

Must've been a hand-me-down to the States or somethin'. Sorta like "All Around The World" by Lisa Stansfield, which was released in several countries in 1989 but didn't become a hit in the U.S. till early 1990. The dreaded "cusp" :-\\

In Canada, 'Black Velvet' peaked in the Top 10 in September of 1989 and was her 2nd hit, following 'Love Is' which saw the Top 20 in June of 1989.

For the world outside of Canada, 'Black Velvet' became a hit in 1990 and was the first single, followed by 'Love Is'

I thought so. Hence the worldwide disagreement as to whether those songs qualify as from the 80s or 90s. :-\\ By the way, I don't think I've ever heard "Love Is" before, but I'm sure it's a decent song. ;)

It scraped the US Top 40, disqualifying her from the one hit wonder status that many American music shows seem to class her under.

The 80's had leftovers that lasted awhile, but around my 8th grade year, 93/94 the 90's look started to really come in, but there were still a lot of stuff that were still going on. However, by the time i started high school in 1994 the 90's 'look and feel' was the only thing there. I'm kind of glad to be in high school from 1994 - 1998 because i sort of went through the best part of the decade, IMO.
