Subject: 1990s or 2000s internet

Written By: Blackjack on 01/02/08 at 8:28 pm

What you think is better?  The 1990s internet or the 2000s internet.

1990s internet is more or less looking up stuff, online shopping, finding a job, selling stuff on ebay, doing homework, chat rooms, porn etc.  It's like for more info,  visit us at www.kraft.com

2000s internet is like... MySpace, YouTube, Blogs, Wiki, P2P,  porn... and ads.  Advirtisements, social networking, and more porn... blogging porn, porn chat, YouTube porn.

I like 1990s better... you!!!

You wanna go back to the days of:
- 14.4kbps internet speed?
- crappy, text only sites with the occasional crappy clipart and cheap looking logo?
- internet connections that take 30 minutes + to get online, and always time out at the worst time?
- long, forgettable website addresses? (ie: www.geocities.com/longname/longername/evenlongername/6732/index/index.html) used to have a geocities address like that
- before adblockers existed?
- before google???
- before inthe00s?????!!

OK on a serious note here, defining the internet by decade is almost the dumbest thing ever.

I like the Internet that gets me on the Internet.  Whether it was in the 90s, in the 2000s or if it was growing on my azz :D

sometimes i miss the simplicity of it, but i have to admit the speed, the graphics, sounds, streaming video...all of it is pretty cool now

but, as frustrating as it may have been, and maybe i even forget exactly how frustrating it was, i miss the old AOL.  i miss the fun chat rooms (before taken over by spammers).  i'm probably partial to it because that's how i got my start on the internet, like most people...AOL.  it was a fun time, full of exploration.

i'd like to go back to the 1990s internet, but only because i'm having a hell of a time pulling the youtube needle outta my arm. :(

I was thinking, yes, it was exciting to see the internet morph from hardly used to welcomed world wide - but I would never want to return to the agonzing days of sitting and waiting and waiting and waiting some more for a connection, then actually getting to my e-mail and having to delete a bunch of spam that was out of control (and believe me, back then, it was totally out of control), then trying to get onto a website to find half the pictures/graphics wouldn't pull up because my modem and server couldn't recognize them. No, this wasn't fun, but yet, I was determined to make the best of my stay on there. I'd only go back to it to maybe save some stuff that I didn't save at the time... other than that, 1990's internet was pretty lame.

I do agree about the old AOL. It was better. When we officially got the internet in 1999, I liked the profile features that AOL had. They were much better than what they have for people now. They were easier to pull up and gave you some nice basic information about people. Now that's no longer the case.

The 1980s Internet.  Before there was the WWW, before there was AOL, and before there was spam.

Man,do I have some nostalgic memories about the 90s internet.

I mean I like the internet of the 2000's,but 90s internet holds a special place in my heart.

I remember back before the MySpace and Facebook days,I used to talk to a bunch of random Asian girls on social sites (pen-pals).I even gave out my home address and contact info to a few of the girls, but I was never stalked or taken away. :)

I still have some of the letters my friend from the Phillipines sent me from 1999 which is almost 10 years old.

I also found out about Pokemon before it hit the states and alot of Anime titles too.

I understand what the OP is saying.

Even though I favor the speed and features of the current day Internet (the "standards" are still around of course, just in an improved sense), I do think it had a certain charm when it was in its early stage from about 1997 to 2001. When that's ALL that existed, and it was more text-based, it felt simpler.

Of course I love YouTube to death (heck, it's my primary television outlet now!) and there's lots of old school stuff on there, and Myspace is great as well...but I think the 'net kinda entered its second generation around 2004/'05 once that took off.

1999 was basically Web 1.5... we are in Web 2.0 and I can see even Web 3.0 coming.... Web 4 will be the sci-fi generation of the internet and the last generation, coming in 2020-2025.

Web 1.0 - internet with the slow dial-up, the crappy clip art and the cool site was Amazon. (pre 1999)
Web 1.5 - better layout, more 2.0 like effects, pages looked more advanced... music downloading, streaming, etc.  (1999-2003)
Web 2.0 - The 2004-2008 internet... what we have now.  MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, Digg, Wikipedia, etc.  (2004-2008)
Web 3.0 - more advanced 2.0... Disney orientated Web 2.0  (2009-2012)  Starting with the Apple TV deal.
Web 4 - sci fi sh**  (2013-2020)

Yeah, there will be different era's in the web's past, present and future.  We can't forget the internet of pre-1996, it was much different than the web of 1997, 1998 and 1999.

yeah, i looked at the archive and the internet was really horrible and it was not the way it was today.  It was mainly text and even some versions of Windows 95, which is now in everybody's garbage, did not have Internet Explorer, but we did had Opera.  Now IE 7 is basically a rip-off to Firefox, which before IE 7, kicked Internet Explorer's ass.

Here's an excellent preview to the Semantic Web, coming in 2009 or even late 2008.... or right now!!! Web 3.0... here it is: http://ecrl.sirsi.net/uhtbin/cgisirsi/LJrKaHHk1h/CA/266190063/60/502/X

The Internet was bad, but being that it was something new at the time did not make it seem all that bad - if that makes sense, lol. It was more novelty for the average user, but if you were a computer whiz, it was probably something you could have more fun with and "get" a little better. It was definetly something Grandma and Grandpa would not be able to use like today's - which is more user friendly.

^ Yeah, when grandmas started getting online, you knew it was a standard and not just some hot new thing. ;) I'd say that happened a few years ago, like 2003ish.

Well at least in the 90's Internet wasn't that full of trolls, dating websites, ads and other crappy things. It wasn't so commercial, there were less ads and it was still something new and cool. I don't think it's considered that cool anymore, now it's just something ordinary, similar to telephones, because everybody uses it.

Yes, but believe it or not, I knew some elders (in their '80s) who were using the internet back in 1999 or 2000. It was rare indeed, and believe me, they had their frustrations!  ;D
