Here's a good website that shows archived Top 40 Charts for America dating back to 1980. It basically ranks each song based on Radio Airplay, which is why it looks a bit different than the Billboard Hot 100 (Which ranks each song based on Sales)
I figured i'd use this chart instead since it's a better account of what was being played the most on the radio at the time.

UNITED KINGDOM (Chart Date: August 27, 1997)
01. (-) Elton John - Something About The Way You Look/Candle In The Wind
Wait a second, this is a bit strange. I'm more than positive that Elton John re-released "Candle In The Wind" AFTER Princess Diana had died? That chart listing is for August 27th, 1997, but Diana didn't even die until August 31st, 1997... ???

Not a bad year. I remember it like it was (almost) yesterday...
02 Dario G - Sunchyme (used to love this being played at club all-nighters, they used to play it as the sun rose at 6 -7 am)
04 The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work (fantastic song... absolutely love this, very poignant)
16 Boyz II Men - 4 Seasons Of Loneliness (great track)
17 All Saints - I Know Where It's At (good at the time - I prefer their other stuff)
23 N-Tyce - We Come To Party (very under-rated girl group. Love their follow-up singles, esp Boom Boom)
38 The Notorious BIG - Mo Money Mo Problems (funky at the time)

1997 was a pretty good year for music. I liked alot of these songs at the time, and still do today.
