Subject: The 10 Years Ago Thread

Written By: Pink on 05/23/07 at 11:24 am

This thread is for talking about whatever was 10 years ago, or about 10 years ago, as of the post. I want this thread to last until the end of 2009.

I was at home, listening to 80s music on the radio.

1997...wow, sometimes it seems like ages ago, and sometimes it seems like just yesterday. This was the year that my grandpap died...right around the 4th of July (actually on the 5th).  I was 20 years old, and in love with a boy from Slovenia. We had been penpals for years, and he was coming over to the US to visit me for 2 weeks....I was so nervous and excited that year.  I was working as an assistant manager that year, at a book/gift store, and I still lived at home. I wish I could go back to that year.

I was in my Sophmore year of H.S. Princess Diana's death happened on my Dad's birthday and I remember watching the news about it and then watching the funeral a few days later (or maybe it was a week later - can't be for certain). Watching Elton John's performance was very touching.

I think that year our car got torched (for the second time) and we decided it was time to move.

Pro Sports:

I remember as a NASCAR fan Jeff Gordon bumping Rusty Wallace out of the lead at the Spring Race(Food City 500) at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennesee and Gordon winning by putting that bump on Rusty's car.

As an NBA fan The Utah Jazz going to the NBA Finals for the first time but losing to the Micheal Jordan led Chicago Bulls in 6 games.

Penn State in College Football beating Texas in the Fiesta Bowl and Ohio State beating Arizona State in the Rose Bowl.

The Green Bay Packers beating the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in 1997 and Packers Kick returner Desmond Howard being named the Super Bowl MVP for that game.

The Spice Girls and Hanson being popular.

Personal life:

Started 5th grade in the Fall of 97. Remember Spice Girls and Hanson being popular among classmates. Turned 10 in May, Indians made the World Series again (and lost), I attended game 3. This was the year I visited Alaska as well. I remember Princess DI and Mother Teresa dying.

Yes, I remember that World Series quite well. It was the first time ever for the Florida Marlins, in only their 5th year of existence. I wish the Indians could've won it 2 years earlier, over the Atlanta Braves. ::)

1997 was a pretty cool year. I was 10 back then, still wishing I could get one of those 'new' 3D video game consoles, still watching Nickelodeon every day, and generally having a good time.

Also I think One Saturday Morning started in the fall of '97. Hard to believe it's been 10 years.

I was in the midst of my second year as a college sophomore. :-) If at first you don't succeed, right?

Things I remember: My sister got married to a guy that lived halfway across the country, I began developing my first real relationship with someone, and I got my first gig in the radio biz. Come to think of it, Princess Diana's death happened on the weekend of my sister's wedding. Definitely a shocker.

Oddly, it was just about Spring of 1997 that my life started becoming like a primitive version of what it is now. Like I've said on here, my parents and I moved around quite a bit when I was growing up and up till I was 14, but I've lived in San Jose ever since then. I was ending my freshman year of High School and even got my first job that Summer (after school janitorial stuff, but it was a start, lol). I also did alot of the same things, although it's also enough of a change for me to miss how it was back then.

You know what's weird? Even in 2004, if you said "ten years ago", you were referring to a completely different old-school part of the '90s. Now that it means 1997, it feels like a quite dated yet somewhat "samey" era (i.e. the Internet was a household name, and getting close to essential; South Park debuted).

I started second grade in September that year. I still didn't have a social phobia (I got it somewhere in 2001, but I am just starting fighting with it) and used to be more confident. Life was just easier. I hope that the best years of my life are yet to come though and that I'll cope with my social phobia.

Set to catch the world by storm.

A storm that dragged on for 3 years :\'(
The charts above (which no longer are in existance) were based on a combination of record company, record store and radio reports across Canada, so Elton's song never hit #1 and only stayed on the charts for a normal amount of weeks

But as a single sold in Canada, it reached #1 on the Singles Sales charts, and hovered the Top 40 for 3 years

Meh.  My day job was starting to suck; was working 60 hours/7 days a week, getting sick all the time, and my relationship with my then-girlfriend (which became my wife and now ex-wife :P ) was being strained because of all the work.  I quit that job in February '98.  I had a nice apartment, my truck was still fairly new and I was DJing at a nightclub when I wasn't too sick to work; that's about all that was good that year. :P

I was a senior in high school; my senior class went on a class picnic to Magic Mountain in Valencia; I hung around with some of my friends and went on rides that I had not previously gone on...and had a good time! At first I was scared to go on Colossus (one of the many roller coasters over there), but my friends convinced me that it would be fun. So I decided to think about the opening sequence of the sitcom "Step By Step" (which features Colossus in the first scene, right before the theme music starts)...and it was fun! My friends were planning on going on Batman The Ride after lunch, but I lucked out because I had to leave early (the reason for that being that I had a doctor's appointment scheduled for the afternoon).

Wow, good for her! 80 is quite a number to reach! My Grandmother won't be 80 until Jan. 3rd. 2009. I hope she makes it! She's my only living grandparent. My grandpa (her ex-husband) died in 2003 at 81. Both my Dad's parents have passed on, as well. His mother passed in 1980 and his dad passed in 2006.

Anyway, this time, 10 years ago, was my close friend's 16th birthday. Today, she turns 26. Cartoon Network was good
Didn't have Sean Paul
Did not have snap music.  Snap music was jazz from the 1950s and Don't Worry, Be Happy.
Emo was underground
Disney Channel was Donald Duck and Goofy
MySpace was not even though of... Facebook did not even cross our mind.  AOL was same thing as MySpace.  Did have MySpace beta in Summer 1998.
Crunk was invented in 1997.
Stupid dances like Crank That was not even thought of or even predicted.
Telletubbies... teens and older kids like them... now we  pick on Telletubbies on YouTube
Video sharing was not even thought of until 2002 or so.
File sharing was in development
DVD's were expensive... No HD or Blu Ray!!
The only High School Musical I see was an actual High School Musical!!

January 23, 1998...was a rather hectic day for me, but it ended on a positive note. At school, a certain lady friend of mine failed to come to my defense when this boy I'd never seen before was attacking me for no reason; the girl didn't do a thing about it, so I was heartbroken. (Reminder: I was a senior in high school then.) So I found the school police and described exactly what happen; while I told the officer about it, my friend happened by. She apologized to me for anything that may have bothered me, and hugged me. The officer suggested that if I find out any information about this boy, to report him ASAP. The good news is that I never saw him again after that.
I said things ended on a positive note that day...that's because I went to see the movie As Good As It Gets that night. I especilly liked Jack Nicholson's character, as well as the dog that was in the movie. :)

It was at this time ten years ago when I began the second half of my high school senior year...but not without a "screwup" in my program of classes. At first they'd put me in a math class which I wasn't supposed to be in. Not only because it was a math class that I had already taken, but also because the class was full of juniors, and I was a senior. So after a week, I dropped that class and replaced it with a "T.A." period. (I spent the period in the counseling office as a T.A., where I would help out with various office tasks.)

Anyhoo, on Wednesday, February 18, 1998, my Spanish class and I took a field trip to a restaurant to order food in Spanish. It was a Coco's restaurant (which no longer exists; it got bulldozed in 2000 after 30 years in business), and the menu was written in English (of course), but we had to mentally translate it into Spanish and tell our waitress (who spoke Spanish) what we wanted. For the record, I think I ordered a hamburguesa.

While I'm on the subject, I believe there used to be one near where I currently live (in Oxnard, CA), but it's not there anymore. The building still exists, but now a pizza eatery occupies the building. It probably lost competition to a nearby Bakers Square.

No. Area codes are associated with the telephone. Here in the U.S., standard phone numbers are seven digits long (such as 867-5309). An area code is a 3-digit code attached to the beginning of a phone number, and is often surrounded with parentheses. Such as: (626) XXX-XXXX. People calling to telephones within their own area code just simply dial the number; if they are calling to another area code, they dial 1, followed by the area code, then the number (example: 1-888-867-5309).

Best of all, since I was a senior at the time, I didn't have to come to school until later in the day (10:00 AM, I think) because the non-seniors had a standardized test that they were taking.

When my parents got back, on Wednesday the 22nd, they brought back a stuffed animal (rabbit) that served as an "eye pillow" because its tummy was filled with lavender and flaxseed, and we used it whenever we felt stressed. It especially came in handy for me the next two months, as I prepared to graduate from high school.

Was Disneyland deserted or was it still crowded with people?

During the wee hours, it was only open to students, faculty members, and chaperones, of schools that had their Grad Nites that night.

I said I was gonna talk about it in more detail, so, here goes.

We arrived at Disneyland after midnight, and we all entered the park through Critter Country rather than through the main entrance. I met up with three friends of mine from school, and hung around with them through the nighttime (actually, "early morning"). About 1:00 we began walking through the park, figuring out what attractions we wanted to go on. We decided first to go on Star Tours, which is in the Tomorrowland area. (Speaking of which, there were new attractions that were set to open six hours later, when the park opened to the public, so we didn't get a sneak peek at them!) My friends and I waited in line behind some other people we knew at school. From there we went towards the Frontierland area, where we rode the Big Thunder Mountain Rail Road. Along the way, I bought a souvenir: a "glowy thing". Then we (any reference of "we" in this post from here on in refers to my friends and me) rode the Pirates Of The Caribbean, after which my friends decided to ride Splash Mountain, but I chose not to. My friends understood, so during the 20 minutes they rode Splash Mountain, I sat alone on a bench nearby. During that time, a group of girls from another school walked by and asked me to take a picture of them with their disposable camera; I gladly obliged. When my friends returned from Splash Mountain, we headed over to the Indiana Jones Adventure ride (which had opened three years earlier) and waited in line for 35 minutes (3:40 to 4:15) before getting on the ride. (The duration of the ride itself was 7 minutes.)
So then we walked over to the Main Street area, browsed around in the shops, and had a little snack. By 5:00, everyone was beginning to head back towards the buses; my friends and I left by 5:30, when the sun was beginning to rise. By 6:00, most everyone was back to their assigned buses, and we left the premises about 10 minutes later. We returned to the school between 7:15 and 7:30; my parents got back shortly thereafter. We got home at 8:00 and rested.

Ahhh...an interesting year, that!  In that year, I was in a two-year college for the third year.  Nobody who is a music major there graduates in two years.  It isn't humanly possible.  And in that year, my choir teacher flipped out on all us students and especially a few students in particular.  Which caused the department chair to get involved to defend the students, which caused a huge argument between the choir director and her, which caused the band director to get involved to try to mediate.  At which point, the choir director--who, I might add, was sleeping with a former student, someone less than half his age 8-P--started accusing his own assistant, one of the students whom he had attacked in the first place, of sleeping with the band director.  And then there were all of us regular students who were caught in the middle of all this insanity. We were batted around like ping-pong balls. Doesn't that sound like so much fun???  What happened in the end is that psycho choir director ended up inadvertently, with his shenanigans, convincing the school's board of directors not to renew his contract, he ended up marrying the girl and they had a kid and moved to Houston.  And then, a couple of years later, she ended up leaving him and taking him to the cleaners just like she did her first husband.  Ray Charles could've seen that one coming.

I had just come home from work and turned on the tv.  I think it was Saturday Night Live that was interrupted when I first saw the news.  I thought it was a joke at first, because you know how Saturday Night Live can be, but when I realized it was true, I felt so sorry for her boys.
