Subject: It's officially been 10 years since...

"The Macarena" reached #1 in the US for the first time

The biggest song of the '90s deserves a little tribute  ;)

There were two versions of Macarena that both reached the US charts.  The popular one by Los Del Rio and the less popular one by Los Del Mar

I remember the Los Del Mar version more, because it was Canadian, but I don't know which version I liked better.  They are both good :)

I wish I could go back in time and make it so that this song never crosses my ear drums.

I have one version on CD, but I'm not sure which one it is. Which one is the softer version?

I remember when it was big.

There was even a thing on Oprah showing everyone how to do the Macarena. My mom, sister, and I were all standing up on the floor, learning it. Embarrassing? Now it is.

It's been so long since I've heard the Macarena, I don't remember ;D

I remember going to the 1996 Dixie Classic Fair. Most of the rides there were playing the Macarena.

This song could inspire mass suicide.

The only version of the song that was even remotely popular in America was the Los Del Rio one which was #1 for about 15 consecutive weeks from August - November 1996.  I doubt anyone even remembers the Los Del Mar version.  I don't think i've even heard it even

Well there's no reason to be all negative

Just cause it is not remembered, doesn't mean it sucks

Even when it was going on, I was positive "Macarena" would date very quickly and be laughed at in that "Ohmygod, I actually liked that!?" sense by 1999. ;D

I didn't hate it (even though I wouldn't want to hear it repeatedly or anything), it was almost cute/good in a novelty sense.

Yeah, it aged pretty fast, but it was huge in '96. Everybody was doing it. We even had to do it during a school program when I was in the 4th grade :-[

When it came out, it was a good song for like a week, then it caught on, and everyone was doing that stupid dance ;D

Yes the Fricking Tweets !!!!!!!!
It was the most irritaing song with an equally stupid dance and 20 years later it still gets played at every kids party/wedding reception you will ever go to I quote from the BBC website.

It didn't even have any lyrics but the Birdie Song - the maddening tune which prompted displays of appalling dancing throughout the 1980s, has been voted the most annoying song of all time.

Not on the record, but it did have an 'unofficial' set of lyrics...

'With a little bit of this' (hands doing beak formation)
'And a little bit of that' (elbows flapping like wings)
'And shake your bum/arse/whatever' (self-explanatory)

I pride myself (in my previous life as a mobile DJ) in never having played it!

Not even if the kiddies asked for it! (Aren't I rotten?)

I do have a modicum of taste, after all  :D

I thought it was okay when it came out, but I wasn't going to rush out and buy the album or the single. I remember just watching the video with those two guys singing it and just laughing.

THink that you are lucky for the UK has had three hit versions of Macarena back in 1996:

Los Del Rio reached 2
Los Del Mar reached 43
Los Del Chipmunks reached 65

...and the latter was only for one week!

The Los Del Mar version only got to #62 here  :\'(

Can't say as I've heard of the Los Del Chipmunks version, but I just gave it a listen, and I'm glad I'd never heard of it ;D
