Written By: Hakkinen on 07/19/06 at 5:04 am

Welcome to the boards, and Great post!  8)

I still believe that NOTHING will ever top "Titanic".  I don't see how it's possible for any movie today to gross more than 600 Million (Domestically).  Especially with Pirating and Downloading of movies on the internet, which have kind of hurt Box Office Totals since downloading movies became popular around 2002.

The 2nd highest grossing film ever (behind Titanic) is the original "Star Wars" which has made a total 460 Million (domestically).  BUT, that's only because it has been re-released so many times to help inflate it's numbers.  So realistically, "Shrek 2" is the 2nd highest grossing ever with 436 Million.  Not very close to Titanic

Thanks Walkman! :)

I agree - nothing will top Titanic domestically (probably until inflation lets a film the size of Shrek 2 or Pirates to catch up). As you said pirating and the mammoth effect of DVD wont allow enough repeat viewings for a film to get that high.

Looks like Pirates of the Carribean 2 will get close to or slightly above $400m - around the league of Spiderman. The others that got close to $400m in the 00's are Return of the King, Revenge of the Sith, Spiderman 2 and The Passion of the Christ.

The above list also shows that 1994, 1997 and 1999 were the strongest years for megablockbusters.

I can also post the above list adjusted for inflation if you like :)

Some absolute doozies in that list...but overall, they range from unmentionably bad to very good. I enjoyed watching Titantic the first time for its spectacle, and historical recreation.etc, but then it de-generated into another poor boy meets rich girl saga. Leonardo DiCaprio was a bit too '90s' for the role - he didn't really immerse himself in the role. I mean you could always tell you from from the 90s rather than actually living in 1912. But yeah, many well loved films on that list.

What I thought was interesting about that chart is that only 19 movies from the entire 1990's grossed more than $200 million, while 2005 alone had 8 movies that grossed above $200 million. I'm sure it mainly has to do with inflation. Also, how Titanic made so much was by its long running time. I think it was in theaters for about 9 months since it's release.

Total Domestic Gross - $600,787,052

"Titanic" spent 15 consecutive weeks at #1 at the Box Office from December 19th, 1997 until March 27th, 1998

The most money it made in a single weekend was 36 Million (In it's 4th week).  It didn't drop below 20 Million until after it's 10th week.

Also, notice it only made 28 Million in it's Opening Weekend, yet it went on to make 600 Million total domestically. That is incredible!  Talk about a movie having "Legs".  I mean, that new "Pirates of the Carribean" made 132 Million in it's opening weekend....that's 104 million MORE than "Titanic" made in it's opening weekend, yet I doubt POTC will gross more than 600 million.

"Titanic" managed to stay in Theaters all the way from December 19th, 1997 (Premiere) until September 25th, 1998

Just Amazing.  We will never see anything like it again in our life time.  I guarentee you that

I remember that at the time, in 1997 and 1998, Titanic was just inescapable. Leonardo diCaprio and "My Heart Will Go On" everywhere...if you went to a mall, it just pervaded the atmosphere.

Another thing, "Titanic" didn't really ever have much competition during its 15 week #1 streak.  Here are the other movies that tried to compete with "Titanic" in those 15 weeks

"Tommorrow Never Dies" (007 James Bond Sequel)

"As Good As It Gets"

"Jackie Brown"

"The Wedding Singer"

"Everest"

"The Big Lebowski"

"U.S. Marshalls"

"Man In The Iron Mask"

"Primary Colors"

"Wild Things"

"Titanic" was eventually knocked off the #1 spot by "Lost In Space" on April 3rd, 1998

You're absolutely right.  It was "Leo Fever".  Every girl in the country loved the guy and was obsessed with him.  And yeah, "My Heart Will Go On" was a serious hit in Early 1998.  All of it was just too surreal

One of my friends in Grade 9 saw it around 8 times or so at the theatre, maybe more.  :o

Here are the top 500 adjusted for inflation. Its not quite the top500 as some films that didnt make the top 50 in the early 90s probably just make it into this list knocking a few from the later 90s out - but its insignificant. Please note that the 90s generally didnt have to deal with the advent of DVD and piracy etc. The second column features the position the film had in the actual chart i listed earlier.

Yes and they both came out in the same year.

Its interesting to note that the re-issue of The Exorcist (the original) in 2001 - made more money than Exorcist 3 did.

As for the adjusted list - the biggest films of the 00's would make a far showing.

Shrek 2 and Spiderman would sit at 6 and 7 respectively behind The Lion King, while Pirates 2 (projected at around $400m) and Return of the King would sit 8 and 9 behind Home Alone.

Titanic was an incredible box office run that will most likely never be repeated. I think its biggest single box office day was Feb 14 Valentine's Day.

In terms of big movies that had great runs - The Sixth Sense, Ghost, There's Something About Mary and The Sixth Sense all had great runs too but they pale in comparison to Titanic.

Titanic made 21 times its opening weekend figure and the average film used to make atleast 4 or 5 times its opening weekend figure. Nowadays some films barely make twice their opening weekend figure. This is largely due to the fact that films open on alot more screens these days and are front loaded. They open much bigger but fall much quicker. Then they are available on dvd in 4 months. It works well for the studios as they stand to make more money this way.

One other interesting story about "Titanic"

Apparently "Titanic" was originally supposed to be released in July 1997, but Harrison Ford was talking to the execs at Paramount and told them if they released "Titanic" in July (The same month that Harrison's movie "Air Force One" was to be released) then he would never do another movie for Paramount again.  So Paramount went ahead and changed the release date of "Titanic" from July to December 1997

But if you ask me, it's the best possible thing that could have happened  ;D

I hope it did!
