Yeah, that's one of my favorite late 1998/early '99 songs too. Sorta teen pop mixed with '80s synthpop.

For a couple years in high school, I went to a gym, and they'd often have the radio on the soundsystem playing those "Today's Hits, Yesterday's Favorites" stations with 1979-present music. That's where I first heard it.

What's even scarier? Just thinking about that makes me just as nostalgic for 1999 as I was for 1992 back then. ;D

I remember it. I loved it back then. Jenifer Paige did have successful 2nd single called "Sober" released in 1999 aswell.

I loved that song...I used to repeat it over and over again. When I hear it today...I can't help turning the volume up just a bit. ;)

I wouldn't call it teen pop, rather club/dance. I loved it.

I remember that song - I liked it too. :) I was a bit surprised that she never scored any more hits after "Crush," and just completely disappeared...

Curious to find out what happened to her, I found this on Wikipedia:

"In 2003 Edel released Flowers: The Jennifer Paige Hits Collection. A Hits Collection after only two records made it obvious that she had parted ways with her record labels and in October Paige admitted she was no longer with either Hollywood Records or Edel Records.

The past few years Paige has been working on her next record. She was still without a publisher, and was supposed to land a record deal to release an album back in 2005."

Yes, I actually bought another one of her singles, but it wasn't all too hot. I never owned the single to Crush, but finally downloaded it about 6 months ago!

Yeah, it had a wider appeal than Britney and all that. It probably just fit that label because it was the closest thing to it at the time. I sorta think it's one of those songs "tied to its era", the same way, say "The Heart of Rock and Roll" by Huey Lewis has sorta survived, but "Walking on a Thin Line", despite being popular, is more "tied to 1984".

I think she became a one hit wonder because it was just bad timing. The Britney craze exploded just a couple months later. If "Crush" had come out in 1996 or '97, it probably would've been received even more popularly.

It came out right around the time I graduated from high school...but I don't remember hearing it at all until maybe three years later. By early '02, it was one of my favourites. 8)

Yep...I liked it the first time I heard it. And she is kinda cute too. ;D

I remember the first time I heard it, I thought it was Mariah Carey-- you can't say there not merely a passing resemblance to their voices. Also made the mistake with the song "Butterfly Kisses"--forgot the singer's name, but it was released in the summer of 1997, and it had to be everyone's wedding song for what seemed like forever--I thought it was Michael Bolton singing it, but again I was mistaken!!

That was Bob Carlisle, as Erin said. I remember that one...it was like his only big hit, and then he vanished. Another one hit wonder. ::)

I didn't think "Crush" by Jennifer Paige was all that great. I lumped it in with all the other vacuous, glossy pop music that was around in '99 like Britney, Christina and the boy groups.

I didn't care for this 1998 song..was the start of the Britney-era months before she started...and the song is not about a crush on a man or anything like that, it was about her infauation with work. I was engaged to a WORKaholic in 1998 and while I appreciate hard work/work ethic all that, I am not a fan of workaholics..

Interesting, didn't realize that (I'll have to read/listen to the lyrics a little more closely next time). I always did in fact, assume it was just about a crush on some guy. For that reason, it struck me as having an almost '80slike "innocent" feel to it.

BTW I think people lumped it in with the Britney/teen pop stuff because the timing was so close (mid 1998 vs. December of that same year). It probably would've stood on its own better if it came out in, say 1996.

I still like the song due to its upbeatness...and she sounds good, too. 8)

Jennifer Paige - Crush - Lyrics (Doesn't sound like a song about a workaholic at all  ::) )

Ahh, crush, ahhh

I see ya blowin' me a kiss
It doesn't take a scientist
To understand what's going on baby
If you see something in my eye
Let's not over analyze
Don't go too deep with it baby

So let it be what it'll be
Don't make a fuss and get crazy over you and me
Here's what I'll do
I'll play loose
Run like we have a day with destiny

It's just a little crush (crush)
Not like I faint every time we touch
It's just some little thing (crush)
Not like everything I do depends on you
Sha-la-la-la, Sha-la-la-la

It's raising my adrenaline
You're banging on a heart of tin
Please don't make too much of it baby
You say the word "forevermore"
That's not what I'm looking for
All I can commit to is "maybe"

So let it be what it'll be
Don't make a fuss and get crazy over you and me
Here's what I'll do
I'll pay loose
Run like we have a day with destiny

It's just a little crush (crush)
Not like I faint every time we touch
It's just some little thing (crush)
Not like everything I do depends on you
Sha-la-la-la, Sha-la-la-la

Vanilla skies (vanilla skies)
White picket fences in your eyes
A vision of you and me

It's just a little crush (crush)
Not like I faint every time we touch
It's just some little thing (crush)
Not like everything I do depends on you
Sha-la-la-la
Not like I faint every time we touch
It's just some little thing
Not like everything I do depends on you
Sha-la-la-la
Not like I faint every time we touch
It's just some little thing
Not like everything I do
Depends on you

It was a fun pop song and she had a decent voice, which I found Britney too computerized

Yeah, I have the single too. It was given to me as a birthday present on my 30th birthday back in 1999. I was so totally hooked on it! It was one of my favorite songs of that year. Very catchy music and all. And Jennifer Paige is cute! I was so disappointed she ended up being just a one hit wonder, I felt she deserved better than that. She had a good voice and seemed like a really nice person. I thought she'd have more success than that.

How do you know what the song is about?

Around the time the song was popular (1998) I remember watching an interview on one of those entertainment shows (like Extra maybe) where they did a segment and she herself said that is what it was about. I at first thought it was about a crush on a guy. A few weeks later one of the weekly "top 100" shows on the radio basically said the same thing.

The lyrics don't seem to fit that, though.  If the lyrics were really vague, I can see it working, but the lyrics specifically talk about *someone*.
