Subject: Products Of The Early 90s

Written By: Trimac20 on 07/09/06 at 1:02 pm

'Gangsta' style clothing, Fubu.etc (even though they may not have necessarily originated out of the period)
'Modern' day R'n'B, e.g. TLC, Salt 'n' Pepa (the latter being a very poor example)
'Ordinary life' sitcoms like Seinfield (which I know first aired in 1989), Roseanne, Friends.etc
The mass popularisation of cultures/sub-cultures associated with Extreme Sports

Can you list any others?

-The origination of twentysomething Gen X "hipster" culture ('70s retro obsession, Lollapalooza, alternative comic books.)
-Popularity of independent film, and its succeeding glory days.
-The bobo lifestyle.
-The softening out of boomers as they reached middle-age with their families.

Basically, but they don't really do anything for the counterculture and they're quite materialistic.

What, in your opinion, are the crucial differences between early 90s and late 90s/00s sitcoms/sofa dramas? One difference I notice is that in shows like 'Full House' they really went into detail about one issue, whereas in late 90s/early 00s sitcoms like 'Just Shoot Me', the issues were less 'deep' and there was less focus on teaching a moral lesson, with more focus on witticisms and funny character studies.

Yeah...alot of late '90s sitcoms (even ones that debuted starting in 1993 or so) went less into depth on a particular issue and were more about urbane witticisms and character interactions (Will and Grace, Frasier, or a set of characters interacting over nothing in particular or a vaguely soapy plot over a sitcom (like That '70s Show.) Meanwhile, shows like Roseanne or even Seinfeld and The Simpsons focused more on specific situations. '00s sitcoms tend to fall into two categories: the incredibly vulgar/stupid and the surreal and unconventional in humor, like Arrested Development.

The ones we get here fall more into the 'incredibly vulgar/stupid category'. I've yet to see any from the 'surreal and unconventional' category.
