Subject: Lenny Kravitz
Written By: ADH13 on 07/04/06 at 11:57 pm
It kind of surprises me how rarely I see him mentioned around here...
I think he is especially notable because he is a black artist doing rock music.. (although he did the classic soul "It Ain't Over Til It's Over" back in the day. I read somewhere that it was written for Lisa Bonet while they were in the process of getting divorced.)
I also really like "Fly Away" which is rock.
I think it takes alot of talent to succeed in two genres as opposite as rock and soul and to cross over the so-called racial divide at the same time.
Any other fans of his around here?

Back in the day, I really liked that song "It Ain't Over, 'Til It's Over". I still love to hear it :)
I also liked "Stand By My Woman". It unfortunately stalled in the US at #76, but it was something of a popular love song here in Canada, where it reached the Top 40.
"Fly Away" and "Dig In" were also great songs 8)

Despite a few missing chart peaks for Canada, here is Lenny's hit singles ...
Chartwise in Canada, Lenny's biggest hit was 'American Woman'. Though it only peaked at #26, it debuted in the Top 40, re-entered the Top 40 an additional 3 times, and spent a total of 56 weeks in the Top 100. That's exactly 1 year and 4 weeks on the chart

Lenny Karvitz is one of those artists that have walked the line between greatness and simplistic derivative music. But I've always liked his style nonetheless.
Some songs are inspired like “It Ain't Over, 'Til It's Over” and “Stand By My Woman” and others like “Fly Away”, “Let Love Rule” and others are catchy tunes but less than imaginative. The guitar hook in Fly Away always seemed a little too average and repetitive to build a song around (I actually find the song quite irritating) :P and as some critics have mentioned, some of his tunes have a decidedly 60’s-’70 rehash feel. A little Zeppelin here, a bit Beatlesque there, but then, that’s always been his style…
I really like his lesser known songs than the pop/radio tunes…some other great, but lesser know tunes are “Flowers For Zoë”, “Fields of Joy (Reprise) (trippy tune), & “What Comes Around, Goes Around”. His album “5” was also a much overlooked gem.

I think he's a pretty cool artist. My fave song has always been "It Ain't Over Till It's Over" b/c it's a damn good love song, even if the love is lost. "Black Velveteen" and "Fly Away" are two other songs I like.

I was surprised by his pretty successful comeback (commercially speaking) in 1998-2001. Before then, all I knew was "It Ain't Over Till it's Over" which sounded almost like an entirely different artist compared to his harder edge in the Y2K era. He actually seemed biggest then.
Yeah, he's one of the few modern, successful black "rock" artists (the hair metal era had Living Colour), and his music seems influenced by '60s and early '70s classic/hard rock as well as soul and R&B.

He has some great music. I remember "Can't Get You Offa My Mind" from mid-1996, and at the time it was my favourite of his. As he began to have some more hits beginning in the late 90s, I began to enjoy him even more.
I'm surprised "Are You Gonna Go My Way?" didn't make the US charts, though. Maybe it was a hit on the Modern Rock charts or something.

That one was big in the US Rock Chart yes. It's quite a shock to see he was more successful outside of the States than he was in the States :o
Here is Lenny's Billboard Modern Rock hits ...
1989 - Let Love Rule
1990 - I Build This Garden For Us
1991 - Always on the Run
1993 - Are You Gonna Go My Way
1993 - Believe
1995 - Rock and Roll is Dead
1998 - If You Can't Say No
1998 - Fly Away
2000 - Again
2001 - Dig In
2002 - Stillness of Heart
2004 - Where Are We Runnin'?

I don't know that one. :-\\ The only songs I know with that title are Elton John's 1995 hit and Cher's 1999 hit (which are different songs).

It was not a big hit in the US :(
When I compiled chart peaks for this poll, I was really shocked to see he'd only had 5 US Top 40 hits :o

Seems like we like him, but don't love him. Of the twelve songs that did make Top 40, only 4 reached Top 10.
Although it only reached #7, "Believe In Me" was Lenny's biggest hit (to date), because it spend more weeks in Top 40. I'm not sure this song was released as a single in UK or US, but here's a link to the video.
Sounds familiar...?

I remember Rock and Roll in dead from 1995 when it was played on the radio at the time in 1995. Rock and Roll is Dead, It Ain't Over Till Its Over, and Always On The Run were good songs. "I Belong To You" and "Are You Gonna Go My Way" were great songs. "Stillness Of Heart" was good and his cover of American Woman was good.

Lenny is a great artist. I still listen to his songs.
On another note, it shouldn't matter if he is a black artist doing Rock & Roll. Please learn your history. Rock & Roll orginated out of the black community and was known then as race music.
