Subject: '90s Snobs?

Do you note a sense of "I Was There, You Weren't" snobbiness from people born in the '80s to those born in the early '90s?

Yeah. I wasn't born in the early '90s, but pretty close.

Anybody that's older than somebody thinks they know more, people older than me think they know more, and I think I remember more than people younger than I.

To someone born in 1990 or 1991, I don't think it's fair. To someone born in 1995 I can understand, and agree.

My earliest memories probably date back as far as late 1992.

Yeah, there's a certain sense of "Oh, you were born in the '90s!" snobbiness. I think it's really ridiculous when you're like 1.5 years older than someone doing that to you, and they were born in 1988 and I was born in the first 2.5% of the '90s.

I don't know. Have I ever come across as a snob? :P
I do think that I would remember things differently, and many things probably better, than you do - I turned 7 in 1990 rather than 1997, and I was the age you are now in 1999. That will obviously make a difference - like it or lump it. You'll be able to say the same thing to people born in 1997 once they grow up and join this forum. ;)
But I think that childhood memories (such as you would have of the decade) can be some of the best. I cherish what foggy memories I have from the meagre 6 1/2 years I spent in the '80s (several of them as a baby), for example.

Yeah, I don't mean that. What annoys me is people born in say 1988 acting superior because they're a year and a half older than I am and I happened to be born in the first 2.5% of the '90s.

You have to agree, though, that it's incredibly stupid when somebody born in 1988 or 1989 talks down to somebody born in early 1990.

Ironically, I think anyone who acts superior to you just because he/she's older is actually a little immature.

To me, I don't see any difference between someone born in 1989 and 1990. I know a lot of people who were born in 1990 and I feel like one of them even though I was born in 1989.

I really am not aware this whole 'I'm better than you/more mature/knowledgeable because I was born in 1989 instead of 1990' thing exists, but I can see it existing. Come on, there's nothing really magical about being born in the 80s as opposed to the 90s, is there?

I always felt close to kids born within 3-4 years of me (so whether that's older or younger, it shan't matter). And like Ebontyne mentioned, they're a bit immature anyway, if they make you feel inferior. I hope I haven't acted that way on here. I just enjoy discussing those memories from time to time...
But, on another note, if you weren't around or born in that decade, you probably should stay in the decades where you remember things most. I mean, I dabble into the '70s and pre '70s boards, but not half as frequently as the '80s and onward...

Same! The only difference I see being born in '89 instead of '90 is that I am technically able to say "the 70s was the decade before my birth", .....but that's about it, lol. I also hope I haven't come across as a snob to you guys.

Earlier this year at school, my teacher told me that it's amazing that I haved lived through the '80s, '90s, and the '00s. Even though I only lived a month in the '80s, he's right. Technically I did.

My brother was born in August 1979, so he hardly spent much time in the '70s himself.. but for some reason, I still consider him a '70s kid...

He's an 80s kids. He was born basically when the 70s ended. I was born in 1976 and remember so little that I cannot call myself a 70s kid b/c my formative years were in the 80s.

There is no real difference. In some cases they may have been born just a month or two apart.

Yeah, very slight, though. I think there's no difference between the classes of '07 and '08, slight difference with '06 and '09.

There is a slight difference. A 1988er and 1990er are both 90s/00s hybrids, but a 1988er would remember the early '90s better than a 1990er.

I think the main difference between somebody born in 1988 and 1990 is that the 1988er would be much more likely to take stuff like glam rap very seriously.

Yeah, there's a slight difference between '88ers and '90ers. But I really dont see much of a difference between '89ers and '90ers.

I think if you divide it based on when you "came of age"/turned 16, you can do it this way:
Classes of '99-'03 (born late 1980-mid 1985, COA late 1996-mid 2001)-Late '90s/Y2K generation.
Classes of '04-'05 (born late 1985-mid 1987, COA late 2001-mid 2003)-Early '00s generation.
Classes of '06-'08 (born late 1987-mid 1990, COA late 2003-mid 2006)-Mid '00s generation.
Classes of '09-'13 (born late 1990-mid 1995, COA late 2006-mid 2011)-Late '00s/V. Early '10s generation

Don't you mean peak 00s teen? An 88er would have been mainly a 90s child...

Yeah, I think he does...though "child of the such and such" is often used to mean teen of such and such. Somebody born in 1988, IMO, is sort of the peak of both the children and teens in that they turned 12 in 2000 and turn 22, graduating college, in 2010.

For most people age 12 is the end of those formative, impressionable years we call childhood...
