Subject: Object of the '90s

Written By: velvetoneo on 06/16/06 at 10:34 pm

The '80s had the rubix cube and the walkman, and the '00s has the iPod and the cellphone as accessory. But what was the definitive object of the '90s?

Windows '95 computers seem definitively '90s. Like those computers are in all my memories of kindergarten and 1st grade, like the 1995 and 1996 peak '90s era. It sort of symbolizes the aspirations of the period, if you know what I mean. It wasn't flashy, it was sort of "gritty" but fun, etc. Also, the "era of the VCR" was the '90s...it was king from 1990-1999.

Windows 95 computers is a pretty big object of the 1995-1997 era. The picture below is my first computer (Packard Bell Windows 95) I got in late 1995. I think the picture was taken in 1997. Whenever I think of Late 1995-1997, I think of this computer. What do you think?

Yeah...to me, my kindergarten-2nd grade period is sort of defined by Windows '95 computers. Like late 1995-mid 1998, the "cartoon heavy" period of my childhood.

Definitely video game consoles like the Super Nintendo, Playstation
Children's fads like Yo-yos
Cards
Plasticky jewelry, 'friendship bracelets' (popular in the late 90s)

I think the video game consoles were definitely a big thing. It's all an individual thing, though. Like, for me, the part of the '90s I remember well that wasn't the late '90s totally (like 1994-early 1998) was defined by Windows '95 and similar older computers.

Yeah, the Win 95 era really spanned from 1995 to as late as 1999. Win 98 from about 1998 to 2003, and Xp from thereon after. I'm older enough to remember the pre Win-95 era: in school we used Win 3.1, when a typical computer ran at about 50MHz, and most applications could still be stored on floppy discs!

My dad still had a pretty old, pre win-95 computer at work as late as 1997 that I remember working on when I would come into the office with him. It's definitely the object I identify with the younger half of my well-remembered childhood.

I never used 3.1 much since I had an Apple in those days and so did my school, but I did use a little bit of DOS and Win 3.1 at other people's houses.

The very first time I ever used a computer was at my aunt's house around the summer of 1995. It was a Windows 3.11 Gateway computer. It rocked. My first computer that I mentioned before, we had it from December 1995 to July 1999. I'd say the two major operating systems of the '90s would be MS-DOS/Win 3.1 and Windows 95.

MS-DOS was never really an operating system, lol  ;D. Well, it sort of was in a way, but it was the command text version of Windows.

Oh yes, Pagers were very 90s. As well as Walkie Talkies, which were not only popular as kid toys...

Ah yes, carphones. This was back when the term "Cell Phone" wasn't as common. Also, my family never took our "carphone" outside of the car.
