I'd say the '90s. People were obsessed with gross stuff in the '90s.

Yeah - things may actually be slightly grosser now overall, but in the '90s it stood out more because we weren't really used to it. Do you think stuff like that was part of the "cool" element still attached to shock value in general (which has actually been around since the '50s, but seems less prevalent now)?

I think so. Today, being shocking is NOT being shocking, for instance abstaining from sex is cool in some circles.

Yeah, the '70s-'90s period most definitely overloaded us with shock value. I think the '90s were grosser...just look at Ren and Stimpy or Beavis and Butthead. Scatalogical things were "in" then, almost a societal mania, retrospectively looking at it.
But "shock value" has been around since the dawn of culture, in many ways, not since the '50s. The Victorian era was full of that.

Um Family Guy started in the nineties, was removed due to lack of popularity then brought back. Not a lot of people know that surprisingly; I thought it was commonly known fact.
I think the 90's because we were gross and we didn't know it but now we know what 'gross' is better in terms of sociability. The nineties is still my favourite era though ^^

And don't forget that "American Pie" was released in 1999.

The 90s were, especially for kids. Just look at cartoons like Ren and Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life to get an idea of the "gross is cool" mindset of the 90s. Nickelodeon in particular seemed to promote this grossness the most.
The 00s have some gross things, but it pales in comparision to the 90s.

I'd say Ren and Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life, were more obscene than gross.
