Like the emo draft, I list a bunch of rock bands, from the '90s and '00s and you say "Grunge" or "Not Grunge" for each of them.
Alice in Chains
Bush
Puddle of Mudd
Nickelback
Nirvana
Staind
Disturbed
Linkin Park
STP

On my scale of 'Grunginess'
Alice in Chains 5
Bush 4
Puddle of Mudd 6
Nickelback 2
Nirvana 5
Staind ?
Disturbed ?
Linkin Park 1
STP ?
Smashing Pumpkins 6: Some of their music was actually quite grungy, mostly the early 'Gish' era
Foo Fighters 2, not grungy at all
A few definitely grunge bands included the Melvins, the Raincoats, Mudhoney, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam.

Alice in Chains - Grunge
Bush - Post-Grunge
Puddle of Mudd - Post-Grunge
Nickelback - Post-Grunge made for thirtysomethings
Nirvana - Grunge
Staind - Not Grunge. It's lumped with Nu-Metal, yet they sound nothing like Linkin Park and Disturbed.
Disturbed - Nu-Metal
Linkin Park - Nu-Metal
STP - Post-Grunge
Smashing Pumpkins - "Alternative"
Foo Fighters - Post-Grunge
I notice a lot of people hate on Post-Grunge. I'd have to say that Post-Grunge isn't necessarily crap. There are some really crappy Post-Grunge bands, but bands like the Foo Fighters and Stone Temple Pilots are awesome.

If that is the best you can come up with I'm afraid you don't know too much about grunge. How you could leave out Pearl Jam and Soundgarden (for starters) is beyond me.

I agree with you, Red Ant...and you shouldn't forget Green River, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone either

The Foos were okay, but a pale shadow of Nirvana. Dave Grohl sort of did feed of the fame mythos of Nirvana/Kurt Cobain, but he was in himself an accomplished musician.

I don't think that was the point of the thread. I think he was just throwing out Random Rock Bands. Since Soundgarden and Pearl Jam are obviously Grunge, it would have probably have been useless including them into the debate. But then again, we could say the same for Nirvana and Alice In Chains, who he did include

The Smashing Pumpkins actually began as a true, dyed in the wool Grunge band, believe it or not. If you've heard Gish and their rawer, earlier demos (pre 'Siamese Dream') you'll see the music is classic grunge; distortions, power chords, occasional screaming. I guess there later stuff was far more varied in character, so people tend to forget that fact.

Their later stuff was more heavily produced and heavily influenced by '70s heavy metal and prog rock as opposed to punk.

Just hear the 'dropping' guitar slides (don't know the term) on tracks like 'Today' (from Siamese Dream), and one immediately thinks of early Grunge.

I agree that alot of grunge vocalists started to sound the same, they all imitated Eddie Vedder.

Billy Corgan sounds like Eddie Vedder?!?
I don't think so..
Has anyone heard of Candlebox? They were an imitation IMO.
