Subject: Late '80s Pop Hits That Sound '90s

I think the songs of Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (an EXTREMELY influential album upon the '90s and '00s) from 1989 sound as a rule very '90s, almost like they could've been released in 1997-1999, even. Most dance music does...like Jody Watley's stuff from 1987 and Paula Abdul's late '80s work sounds just as '90s as '80s, in a way. But there's something so modern about Janet Jackson's stuff from the period. Any thoughts? I know we've already established alot of "college rock" sounds '90s.
