Subject: Did 1997 remind you of 1989 at all?

Written By: batfan2005 on 04/21/06 at 11:22 am

I noticed there are a few similarities between 1997 and 1989, mostly with the style of movies. Also, South Park, which premiered in '97 is like the equivalent to the Simpsons, which premiered in '89. From the other posts I read, '89 was the year for Gen X and '97 was the year for Gen Y.

However, I thought 2005 was even more similar to 1989 than 1997 was.

I was just thinking the same exact thing a couple days ago.  They both just seem like "Campy" years. Tons of Pop Music and New TV Shows

And both years tend to have a Song that relates with that particular year, like 1997 with "Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind and 1989 with "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals

Both were very campy years with some movies of distinguishment, and "epoch" change years.

The Simpsons have been around since 1987

The Simpsons were on the Tracy Ullman Show, but the first episode of the Simpson's itself was the Christmas episode, which aired right around Christmas '89.

Has anyone here seen the Tracy Ullman Shorts? Didn't you find them slightly creepy?

Considering I was born in 1990, I don't see how 1997 could have reminded me of 1989  ;D

But seriously, I see where you're coming from.  Both years were rather dark and changed the atmosphere.  Also, 1990 was like a washed out extension of 1989 with a little more proto-'90s things, just like 1998 was like a washed-out, slighty more new school 1997.

I always consider them starting in '87, too, as that's when I first remember seeing the show and thinking they were an odd bunch of characters.

That's true, they started as part of the Tracey Ullmann show, although they didn't begin their own series until late 1989.

It's also how 2006 is to 2005. 2005 was a year for the 00's kids, and 2006 is a continuation of 2005.

2005-2006 was very dull and washed out compared to 2003-2004 and 2004-2005, which were probably the peak of '00s culture.

I agree. 2004 was the peak of the 00's. 2005 and 2006 are just a washed out version of '04 as you said.

I actually really agree with this statement, because I have seen a sudden shift in *especially* music again from the way it was just a few years ago.

Also, I've noticed some decades start changing so rapidly that the following decade seems to mirror the previous one for quite some time (as we have all rehashed). SO, like the mid to late 70's didn't really disappear after the clock struck January 1st 1980. Even as far as into 1982 did the 70's still have a VERY strong influence on the decade. Not until about 1984-1985, did the 80's REALLY sound and feel 80's. So, the 2000's may now actually get it's own identity. It's pretty much flushed a lot of 90's stuff and it's going through a "transitional phase."

Okay, maybe I'm getting too deep again...  ;D

I'm of the opinion that the honest-to-God, new wave '80s began in late 1982.  1979-mid 1982 is more like the last stage of the '70s, combined with remnants of the '80s.  The "core '80s" is like 1983-1988. 1989-mid 1991 is like the final stage of '80s-ness, combined with the seeds of the '90s.

Yeah, I think the honest-to-God '80s began with Thriller being released as an album, even if British new wave had charted before that.

Wow, I heavily disagree

I think that 2004 was the Worst and Most Boring year of the 2000's so far (Also filled with horrible music).  I think 2003 was the peak, up until about November, then it started going downhill

I agree with that, but if you listen to a whole night of 82 pop chart hits, you're going to just get a sprinkle of the "core 80's" in there, the stuff that "defined" the 80's sound came from the mid-80s.

i have the same opinion too. i liked 2003 but then it went straight downhill once 2004 came, i also hated the music of that year(i only liked 2 songs in particular). its now gotten better now in 2006, but i know it will get better i hope, i think things are finally starting turn over a new leaf. 2005 wasn't that bad, it started like 2004 but it was good by the end. i have good hopes for 2006, i think a major pop-culture change will happen this year.

Agreed

It's funny because I hated 2004, but I loved 2005.  So things went downhill for about a year and then started getting better (In my opinion)

I would consider 2003 as my favorite year from the 2000's, with 2005 as a close 2nd
