Subject: Were the '90s thought of as overly high-tech?
Written By: Donnie Darko on 04/11/06 at 1:24 pm
Today in the '00s, things really are pseudo-futuristic, as you can carry music around in your pocket, etc. Sure there were computers and Internet in the '90s, but you couldn't walk around with your music collection, watch TV on a portable device, rewind live broadcasts, or use your phone as a camera.
Did people see the '90s as being super-tech, in the same light as now in your opinion. Did it apply as much then?

Today seems to be more about improvements to existing tech. However the mid to late 90's did feel like walking into a new technological age with internet bubble, mainstream cell phone use, ect. Added to this was the anticapation of Y2K

There was more anxiety about tech, I think...but there should be more now than then.

Would you say the '90s were actually at our current level or simply approaching it?

In the late 90s technology was a very big deal...especially the issue of older people adapting to the new technological world, the internet.etc. As now, there was technological revolution after revolution.

I felt as if the new techs were a sign of us entering a "brave new world" of the new millennium. However the general excitement of society about the future has been dampened with all the countless troubles of this decade for America.

Yeah, this new century hasn't been great at all. I remember, back in the 90's, everyone was looking forward to the 21st century. The prosperity of America, the tech bubble, and and the relative peace of the decade seemed like they would continue on forever. We certainly left the 20th century in style. Unfortunately, our dream of the 21st has been shattered thus far. We are now confronted with a new Cold War-esque conflict (War On Terror), an unstable economy, the spector of Peak Oil (the fact that it's considered a possibility now, instead of being a fringe theory, says a lot), etc. It really is depressing when you think about how all our expectations for the 21st century have been usually met with the exact opposite.

As a pre-teen and teen in the 90's, it seemed high tech to me at the time, but looking back on it now, it looks rather rudementary. Not as bad as the 80's stuff, but there still needed some kinks worked out.

I'd agree. '80s technology looked badly dated by the mid '90s. '90s technology is definitely dated today in the mid '00s, but not as bad as '80s tech was then. It's still pretty lo-tech though, even 1999 isn't really that close to 2006 technologically speaking.

But the technological progression has occured mainly in a few areas; mainly computers, communication and consumer electronics. In terms of things like home-appliances, heavy machinery, automobiles.etc the changes have largely been cosmetic 'fluff'. For instance LG's internet fridge has been something of a gimmic. We needn't see real revolutions in the way we live as happened in the 40s and 50s, more so a revolution in the manner we communicated etc. The 80s technological was actually pretty similar to the 90s; the main difference was stylistic. 00s is just an improvement over the 90s.

Life was very barbaric in the 80s,...the 90s too.

Slightly better, but not by much.
