Subject: Late 90's Nostalgia?

Written By: sonikuu on 03/13/06 at 4:38 pm

Is anyone here at least a little bit nostalgic for the late 90's?  It's hard to believe, but 1997 is already 9 years ago!  It's kind of surreal when one thinks about it.  I definitely am somewhat nostalgic.  There are tons of stuff from the late 90's that I don't care for or just plain hate, but I do miss some things from that era.  It still feels too close to modern day to be truly nostalgic for it, but it's now becoming clear to me that many things in the late 90's are out of date, even if some are just slightly so.  So, anyone else nostalgic for at least some of the things that were around in the late 90's?

I'm sort of nostalgic for the late 90's. Not pop culturaly, but for my life. I'm mainly 90's nostalgic from 1992-Early 1997.

I'm the same as Roadgeek in terms of "nostalgia", but the late '90s is the time I remember the best of the '90s, and alot of it is already starting to look out of date, and there was still a ton of the "peak '90s" left. Though I didn't care for alot of late '90s stuff (I admittedly know every song, though, from constant exposure), the music was definitely catchy and there were alot of great pop-rock songs out there (Tonic, Everclear, Cake, All Saints, Destiny's Child, Natalie Imbruglia, TLC, even "Baby One More Time"...) . That, and the movies and TV were still pretty good...if you listen to late '90s stuff, it is starting to sound pretty dated, admittedly...not totally, but it sounds out-of-date now. And at least there was variety back then.

Depends. In terms of popular music, I personally liked 1995-98: music was still extremely diverse, older female singer-songwriters had success on the charts, MuchMusic still played videos from the early '90s, and music videos in general were of a better quality and more distinctive. Even the Spice Girls sound better to me now; I think they're closer in spirit to some of the goofy, fluffy, but infectiously catchy stuff from the '80s than to anything of today. (Plus I'm amused by how completely dated their videos already look. ;)) But 1999 seemed to represent a noticeable change, one that had probably been underway for a while, though I only really noticed it in that year. That year already felt more like the '00s in some respects. It's when Eminem, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, and some other big '00s icons began to show up, I think. Toward the year 2000 everything was becoming more and more about boy bands and teenybopper music, and even though the music itself has changed considerably since then, I still feel like everything is geared toward 13 year olds today. In my typically long-winded way, I guess I'm trying to say that I really miss the diversity of the '90s. ;)

Yeah...Tori Amos, Sheryl Crow, k.d. lang, Natalie Imbruglia, still were successful artists c. 1998.

I'm defidently getting nostalgic about the late 90's. I had some good times in 1998. And in '99 when I was in the 7th I had one of the best school years ever. Musically the late 90's are hit or miss but overall those were pretty good times.

Yeah, you still had Sarah McLachlan and such, not fake Ashlee Simpson female singer-songwriters. I just don't think introspective female singer-songwriters fit with '00s culture.

Is the '00s less friendly to women? I'd say so...it seems like the charts and critical circles were frequently woman-dominated in the '90s, now female artists aren't as popular or successful.

Probably, though they say women had a good year on the charts in 2005.

1998 or so was the last year that still had enough pre-Britney and N*Sync stuff left to call it truly culturally the '90s, and Seinfeld was cancelled and The Simpsons went sour that year. But I still think there was a '90s vibe and atmosphere in alot of ways up through the summer of 2001.

I sort of draw the line at 1998 as well. Even though i'm actually starting to get nostalgic for even up to 2000, culturally 1998 was the last year that felt really 90's even though it did still have a 90's feel up to mid-2001 as you said.

Agreed 100%. I have "mild nostalgia" for 1997 to as recent as 2001. ;)

I think there was definitely some noticeable difference with 1998 to '99. In fact, '97 and '98 were like the perfect bridge between the "pre Internet/VHS dominated/grunge era" main '90s, and the current era we're in now.

1998 definitely still had some old-school in it, with Seinfeld (albeit in its last season :( ) and being pre-Britney Spears and still somewhat before the Internet and cellphones became COMPLETELY household/necessities.

Yeah, cell phones still only seemed like something the rich and jetset businesspeople, and young hot thangs, had until even 2000. It wasn't a common thing for say, a suburban 13-year old, to have.

I think late 1999-middle 2001(the really late '90s, as opposed to '97 and '98, which were just the plain old late '90s), was the same as what we have now in alot of ways, with the tech bubble starting to decline and then crashing, and similar technology, but less widespread. But there was still an ultraconfident '90s vibe to 2000 and even early 2001, despite Bush getting elected. I pinpoint 6th grade (2001-2002) for me, though, as the year where the '00s really began, kicked off by 9/11, but it didn't REALLY get off the ground until I was in 7th grade and then exploded when I was in 8th grade (2003-2004ish) as a decade.

1999 is the year I find most nostalgic...it marked a sort of dividing year from my 'old' life (my childhood) proper, and a new world. I also started high-school that year. It seemed like the year when the tech bubble really burst.

I'd have to agree Marty. I feel like that 1997-1999 era is pretty much the bridge to the modern era as you mentioned. I was in middle school during those years and I distincly remember that nobody had cell phones but now it seems like the middle school kids are the main ones that have cell phones(are at least whenever you see one they've got a cell phone). Also I came across a blank tape with some 1998 recording on there and I must say, 1998 is starting to look rather old.

You know what?  I never thought I'd warm up to the late '90s, but YES.

1998 and 1999 seem like yesterday to me, and 1997 and probably even 1996 don't seem that far off.

But the 1996-born 10 year old of today would frighteningly enough see 1998 the same way a 1986er would see 1988.

I find it mind-boggling that 1997 is as close to 1988 as it is to now, datewise.  Pop culturally, it is SO much closer to today, but in a lot of other ways it is really just as close to the late eighties.

I agree with McFly about 1998 having the last bit of old school-ness.  Nintendo 64 was still hot then, and the Internet of 1998 is pretty primitive compared to that of now and was much less popular globally.  Still though, all of the '90s, even 1990 have a bit of "new-school ness" to them too.  Even as far back as 1987 there were bits of pieces of the hip hop/punk/teenybopper culture we're in now.

The political culture/socioeconomic culture we're in now probably dates back to the '70s, and our current pop culture started its current phase c. 1983, in alot of ways.

Yeah that is odd. 1998 and '99 still seem very recent to me too even though since I was in middle school then and I'm out of school now it's starting to feel somewhat distant. It's odd for me to think about a '97er viewing 1998 and 1999 the same way I see 1988 and 1989. To them the 80's probably seem as old as the 60's did when I was there age :o

That's really scary.  Just to think that in 2010, 1980 will be as long ago as the Moon Landing was in 1999 (30 years ago), a 1970er will turn 40 and 1990 will be 20 years ago.  This is really close too; 2010 is as close to now as 2002 is to 2006.

Even though I was born in 1990, that's basically the end of the '80s, so I've never seen the 1980s the way I'd see the 1960s or 1970s.  The '70s were 10+ years before I was even born, but the '80s were ultra-recent times until I was like 9.

Yeah being born in the 80's has meant that they've never really seemed that far away to me. Don't get me wrong they feel old but not far away. It's just so odd to think about how distant they'll feel to a late 90's-2000's born kid. Take a 2000's born kid for example the 80's was 20 years before they were even born. Think about how old they must feel to them.

One of the reasons for that is our innocence as a nation came back. The late 90's were a great time financially and kind of fun. But the economic downturn of 2000 followed by 9/11 jolted everybody back to reality, and there was plenty of bitterness stemming from the 2000 election as well which I believed turned politics on to a level of nastiness that I've never seen. It's only normal to yearn for the years of preace, progress and prosperity. The paranoia-war/recession/stagnation era seems depressing in comparison.

Although a child of the 80s, the late 90s were a great time for me and I do get nostalgic for the vibe going on in the clubbing scene. I was out partying 24/7 and doing things I shouldn't have been doing. I literally lived in the city centre and in the clubs.
