It was hi-tech Arcade and Home Video Game system known for it's very difficult games. "The Super Spy" and "Crossed Swords" are still the two hardest video games I have ever played in my life :o

I remember two things about it.....
1) You couldn't buy the system in regular stores.
2) It was freaking expensive.

Ah, I love some of those games. I only have them on Genesis or Super Nintendo though. The Neo Geo is horrendously expensive. Even today, some games will cost you hundreds of dollars!

Yes I remember it and indeed too expensive, but fortunately I had the chance to play some of these games at the arcade, namely Super Sidekicks 3, Bust A Move and my personal favorite, Metal Slug.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I just may be, but wasn't that machine made by NEC and built around an actual arcade engine? If so, that would explain both the high cost and exquisite graphics.

It was made by SNK, and it was built around an actual arcade yes. The games they made for it were exact duplicates of those found in arcades

I remember the name...and nothing else. But when I mentioned, Sega came to mind for some reason. Does the Neo-Geo have any relation to Sega (the enemy)? Nintendo forever...

Yeah I remember the Neo Geo. It didnt really get much attention when it came out and since it came out right around the time the Saturn and Playstation did(I think) it got buried under all that hype. Also didnt SNK come out with a handheld system in around '98 called the Neo Geo pocket color? I think they did.

The Neo Geo first came out in 1990 in an attempt to destroy Sega and Nintendo. The system was so expensive, it never did, but the Arcade versions were immensely popular :)

Here's some figures ...
On it's debut in 1990, the Neo Geo sold at $649.99 and the game cartridges cost $200 and up :o

:o
It seems like there was alot of unusually expensive video game systems relesed in the 90's. Take the 3DO for example. Didnt it cost upwards of $700?
Yes. The 3DO cost $700 and the games sold as high as $250. Those prices are just too expensive for any kind of video game :o

I agree. And it looks like that trend could be coming back with the PS3. It could cost up to $500. Even the Xbox 360 costs $400 for the best package. I think that $250 is the ideal price for a new video game system.
The way things go these days, you're best off waiting until someone makes an emulator out of it. Right now, you can get XBox and PS2 Emulators.

Some of the games for the Neo Geo wouldn't have been worth $200.
That one game Super Spy was quite ridiculous. You had fists, a knife, and a gun. The gun only had 6 shots, and the knife would go dull after you used it like 8 times. By punching the guys, it would take twice as long, so to finish the game would take atleast 5 hours ;D
What was even stranger was on one of the higher levels, you are given brass knuckles on your right hand, but the guy punches with his left hand ???

When the Atari CX-2600 console came out in 1977 it listed for around $200. I think they actually sold for around $150 and by 1980 they could be had for between $60-$90. Figuring inflation, I'm thinking $200 in 1977 would be around $450-$500 today. I guess that's just the agreed amount by the manufacturers. In another 20 years, they'll probably retail for $600-$700 or more. I'm glad I like the old school stuff. ;D I'll wait a few years aand pick up an X-Box or PS2 for about $20. :D

Man .. $200 for an Atari 2600. The games were so cheap, I still wonder how they sold as long as they did. You pay like $50 for an Atari game that is only fun for like 5 minutes before it gets boring :(

$250 for a game? I won't believe it. Perhaps it was a double-cartridge or something. From what I see, the Neo-Geo wasn't all that great...I still remembering getting my SNES with the 'Mario All Stars' 5-in-1 (does anyone here remember that?) in early 1995. It cost about $350 all up. I remember 'premium' SNES games cost $100, and cheaper ones maybe $70. When the N64 came out prices were similar. The N64, I think, was about $400 when it first came out. The Sega Saturn and Playstation were both $600+ when they came out, and the Xbox and PS2 similar prices when they debuted. Some games could be up to $130. Of late, I haven't seen a console retail for more than $550-600. Mind you, all these prices are Aussie.
So if the $250 you are referring to was American, and considering the exchange rate during that period was closer to 50 cents to the dollar, it would mean a typical Neo-Geo game would cost $500 over here!!

Neo Geo games were just ordinary cartridges. The only reason they were so expensive was because you could play the exact same game in the arcades that you could on the Neo Geo system
