Subject: 90s songs that "speak to you" now

Written By: audkal on 12/07/05 at 11:13 pm

A Beatles song "Free As a Bird", which was released in '95 has a line in it that makes me think of my brothers and I, like what will life be like when we're not living under the same roof with eachother?--

Whatever happened to
the life that we once knew?
Can we really live without each other?

Where did we lose the touch
that seemed to mean so much?
It always made me feel so...

Free as a bird

The whole Sarah McLachlan album, "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy" is what comes to mind for me.

I'd say Jesus Jones' "Right Here Right Now." People often can easily recall the 60's, 70's and 80's, but after that the 90's and even the 00's are a blur--so many say that these decades had no spark to them. As an individual growing up in the 90's, well, yeah, I may not have been around in the earlier decades, but the 90's and 00's hold a place in my heart because I WAS THERE. Like Jesus Jones sang, "There is no other place I'd wanna be."

I remember when the TV show "Friends" first came on in 1994, when I was 14 years old. I thought it was really funny, and it had a catchy theme song that everyone liked. At the time, the characters on the show were in their mid-20s.

Well, I was watching a re-run of "Friends" just now, and I was overcome with horror when I realized that now that I'm the same age as the characters, I'm actually living the lyrics to the "Friends" theme song!

Your job's a joke
You're broke
Your love life's DOA
It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month or even your year

It's just so tragic!  http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/03/cry(1).gif

I'm only a year or two younger than you, so I sorta know what you mean. The lyrics fit my current life in most respects too.

When I was 12 or 13, I thought of people in their 20s, or even up to 30 as being like older friends or really older cousins. Back then, if you'd asked me what I thought I would be like at the age I am now, I probably would've said Wayne and Garth or something - which is sorta true, lol. Although I guess when you're there yourself, it gives it a different perspective than if you're just an observer. I miss so many things about the mid '90s (and, of course earlier), so I know what you mean about it feeling uneasy to go into a different stage of life.

I recently noticed those lyrics while watching Friends too!  Like....who would've known back then that we would actually be able to relate to that song.

Also, can't believe I didn't put in the lyrics from that Beatles song in my original post, I'm gonna edit them in.  :)

Oh yeah, and Seal's "Don't Cry"--

When we were young,
And truth was paramount.
We were older then,
And we lived our life without any doubt.
Those memories,
They seem so long ago.
What's become of them? When you feel like me I want you to know.
Don't cry.
You're not alone.

It's sorta borderline '80s, but I always liked the words of "Baby Baby" from Amy Grant. Based on the lyrics as well as what's portrayed in the video, I took it as a sweet "in love" kinda song. I always would've liked to have a girlfriend to dedicate it to me, lol (of course I'd do the same in return).

Also, parts of "Nobody Knows" by The Tony Rich Project I can identify with (as I assume most people can, at one point or another), about the masquerasion of pain or certain feelings:

Like a clown I put on a show
The pain is real even if nobody knows
And I'm cryin' inside
And nobody knows it but me

Wow, I posted here almost a year and a half ago...LOL.  I would pick the early Sheryl Crow stuff now, and No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom."

Also, Sugar Ray's "Someday" --

Someway
When the sun begins to shine
I hear a song from another time and fade away
And fade away
Just close your eyes and I'll take you there
This place is warm without a care

As long as we are on the topic of Lyrics to 90's songs and ones that speak to you, here's the grand daddy of them all, the song "Popular" by Nada Surf (Which was a big rock hit in the Summer of 1996)

Basically the entire song (Lyrics) is a commentary on High School Life in the 90's...And the melody of the song is great, it just screams mid 90's rock.

Here's the Music Video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8g_wavcFR4

And here are the lyrics...

Three important rules for breaking up
Don't put off breaking up when you know you want to
Prolonging the situation only makes it worse
Tell him honestly, simply, kindly, but firmly
Don't make a big production
Don't make up an elaborate story
This will help you avoid a big tear jerking scene
If you wanna date other people say so
Be prepared for the boy to feel hurt and rejected
Even if you've gone together for only a short time,
And haven't been too serious,
There's still a feeling of rejection
When someone says she prefers the company of others
To your exclusive company,
But if you're honest, and direct,
And avoid making a flowery emotional speech when you break the news,
The boy will respect you for your frankness,
And honestly he'll apeciate the kind of straight foward manner
In which you told him your decision
Unless he's a real jerk or a cry baby you will remain friends

(chorus)
I'm head of the class
I'm popular
I'm a quarter back
I'm popular
My mom says I'm a catch
I'm popular
I'm never last picked
I got a cheerleader chick

Being attractive is the most important thing there is
If you wanna catch the biggest fish in your pond
You have to be as attractive as possible
Make sure to keep your hair spotless and clean
Wash it at least every two weeks
Once every two weeks
And if you see Johnny football hero in the hall
Tell him he played a great game
Tell him you like his article in the newspaper

(chorus)
I'm the party star
I'm popular
I've got my own car
I'm popular
I'll never get caught
I'm popular
I make football bets
I'm a teachers pet.

I propose we support a one month limit on going steady
I think It will keep people more able to deal with weird situations
And get to know more people
I think if you're ready to go out with Johnny
Now's the time to tell him about your one month limit
He won't mind he'll apreciate your fresh look on dating
And once you've dated someone else you can date him again
I'm sure he'll like it
Everyone will appreciate it
You're so novel, what a good idea
You can keep your time to your self
You don't need date insurance
You can go out with whoever you want to
Every boy, every boy in the whole world could be yours
If you'll just listen to my plan
THE TEENAGE GUIDE TO POPULARITY

(chorus)
I'm head of the class
I'm popular
I'm a quarter back
I'm popular
My mom says I'm a catch
I'm popular
I'm never last picked
I got a cheerleader chick
I'm the party star
I'm popular
I've got my own car
I'm popular
I'll never get caught
I'm popular
I'm the teacher's pet
I make football bets

It definitely spoke to me
