Subject: Best Year of the 90's for MOVIES?
Written By: Mac1 on 08/15/05 at 7:31 pm
So which year throughout the 90's produced the Best Movies?
I would say it's a Tie between 1994 and 1999, here are some of the Movies from those years
1994
"Léon: The Professional"
"The Shawshank Redemption"
"Forrest Gump"
"Pulp Fiction"
"Ed Wood"
"Natural Born Killers"
"The Lion King"
"Dumb and Dumber"
"Clerks"
"The Crow"
"Interview With The Vampire"
"Speed"
1999
"Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace"
"The Matrix"
"American Beauty"
"Fight Club"
"The Sixth Sense"
"American Pie"
"The Green Mile"
"Girl, Interrupted"
"Toy Story 2"
"Sleepy Hollow"
"Being John Malkovich"
"The Insider"
"Notting Hill"
"Office Space"
I suppose I would give the Nod to 1994, considering my 2 Favorite Movies of all time are "Léon The Professional" and "The Shawshank Redemption"
What do you guys think?

In your 1999 list you forgot one of my favorite movies, "The Red Violin".
1993 had some rather awesome movies, especially since that was the year of both, "Jurassic Park" & "Much Ado About Nothing".
I'll have to get back to you on more.
Also 1996 had both, "Evita" & "Star Trek: First Contact" (the first "Star Trek" movie that had the only the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" crew featured and not the 1960's cast & also the best of that franchise movie in the 1990's); again let me think of some more movies from 1996 later (I know there were more).

1994 is also my personal favorite.

I would agree with 1994 being an excellent year in film, but there are also some missing notables from your list:
"Clear & Present Danger"
"The Client"
"The River Wild"
"Little Women"
"Legends of the Fall"
"Ace Ventura: Pet Dectective"
"How To Make An American Quilt"
I would also tie in 1995 and 1993 as being great years in film.
1995:
"Braveheart"
"Babe"
"Waterworld" (I know, but I liked that movie for some strange reason!)
"Casper"
"The Santa Clause"
"The Bridges of Madison County"
"Clueless"
"Apollo 13"
"Sense & Sensibility"
1993
"Schindler's List"
"Groundhog Day"
"The Fugitive"
"Falling Down"
"The Remains of the Day"
"The Age of Innocence"
"Demolition Man"
"Dazed and Confused"
"What's Eating Gilbert Grape?"
1999 was probably just slightly below those choices, but still a standout among most of them.

1995 was a great year for movies. Seven, Leaving Las Vegas, Casino, etc. Cant remember them all. And 1996 was the best year ever for summer blockbusters: Independence Day, Twister, Mission Impossible, Eraser, Star Trek-First Contact, etc.

I think the 90's (especially the first two thirds) was definitely the time for alot of dumb comedies. I treat those much on the same level as 80's songs like "We Built this City" - I love 'em to death, but might be embarassed to say it to certain people, LOL! ;D
At the time I watched anything and everything from Pauly Shore, Jim Carrey, David Spade (I still love those guys today too) as well as 80's stars continuing their success into the 90s, like Bill Miurray, Steve Martin and Rick Moranis.
Let's also not forget John Candy, who had some more great roles before his untimely death in '94 (which really made me sad for a few days). :(
If I had to pick a singular year, probably a tie between 1992 and 94 (although like 91-95 was a GOLD MINE), though I'm slightly siding with '94.
A few favorites include:
-Ace Ventura
-Naked Gun 33 1/3
-Forrest Gump
-The Professional (only watched it a few years later, but it was really good, if not kinda dark/sad in places)
-Grumpy Old Men
-In the Army Now
Of course, I'm tempted to go with 1990 and '91 too, with more 80s-ish films like Home Alone and Wayne's World.

1998 was a great year for films too - these are some of my faves from that year:
Armageddon
There's Something About Mary
Rushmore
The Truman Show
The Wedding Singer
City of Angels

I probably would agree with this assessment of the year 1998, and here are some other films out that year (and a few of these won Oscars@):
"Primary Colors"
"Pleasantville"
"The Thin Red Line"
"Life Is Beautiful"
"Saving Private Ryan"
"Shakespeare In Love"
The remake of, "The Mask Of Zorro"
"Gods And Monsters"
and then these two very excellent animated films and probably the two best of the decade, IMHO:
"Mulan"
"A Bug's Life"
