Janet Jackson's CD (I think it was called Velvet Rope or something like that) was great! It was probably one of the best CD's I thought I'd ever heard up to that point in my short life.

Janet's CD for '93 was simply called "janet."

Yeah, "Again" was on that album.. and I believe it charted in 1994, but it was part of that movie "Poetic Justice" which was in 1993, so I really associate that song with 1993 rather than 1994, especially since I was playing her album all throughout the summer of 1993 and watching reruns of Speedracer on MTV... good times, good times..

Yeah, Rhythm is a Dancer was definetly a 1992 hit... But, a lot of songs that were similar to it came out between the summer 1992- and early 1993, so it's easy to mistake the year on some of them.

Duran Duran: "Come Undone" and "Ordinary World"
Tears For Fears: "Break It Down Again"
New Order: "Regret"

I really liked Duran Duran's "Come Undone"

Another famous song from 1993 would be "Fields of Gold" by Sting. I had been misinformed at one time that Bruce Willis sung that song.. I thought that was the strangest/coolest thing I knew - and then my bubble got burst! I also like the 1994 film use of Sting's 1993 release "Shape of My Heart" in "The Professional."

"Eat the Rich", Cryin" and "Livin' on the Edge" Aerosmith
"Hey Jealousy" and "Found out About You" - Gin Blossoms

Kick Him When He's Down - Offspring
Mary Jane's Last Dance - Tom Petty

Ace Of Base's debut album, The Sign, was released in '93; the first cut from that album, "All That She Wants" was a U.S. hit during the last quarter of the year. "The Sign" and "Don't Turn Around" were also from that album, but didn't hit the charts (at least in the U.S.) until '94.

If there's any songs on here that aren't from '93 then Mr. Ellipsis will probably let us know. ::)

Duran Duran: "Come Undone" and "Ordinary World"

Yeah, I really loved both of Duran Duran's songs from that "Wedding" album CD.  That whole CD was top notch.

There are four other songs (or releases) from that year, 1993, I liked -- even if 1992 is still my favorite year in music (one a lot of people forget about):

"The Crying Game" by Boy George
"Passionate Kisses" by Mary-Chapin Carpenter
"Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum (I know this gets knocked by some as not the groups usual style and also being a bit depressing, but it was a great tune nevertheless)
& the rare one is Don Henley's remake (when he briefly was in the "Guys & Dolls" revival on Broadway) of "Sit Down Your Rockin' The Boat"

I agree about Duran Duran's "Wedding" CD being pretty good that year. I actually had that CD and played it a few rounds until I got tired of it. It was actually not mine, but my brother's best friends CD.

"The Crying Game" is a great song that I rarely get a chance to listen to. I use to have it on a compilation CD put out by Blockbuster Music, but I loaned it out to someone and haven't seen it since  :(

"Runaway Train" was soooo sad of a song and video. I had such a hard time watching that video because it made me realise how easy it was to lose somebody so quickly. Plus, seeing the missing children on the screen was so heartbreaking. I thought although it was sad, it still had a good message.

"Passionate Kisses" is another great song from that year.

I am not sure if I've heard Don Henley's song from that year, but I have heard his Greatest Hits CD and can't be for certain if that's on there or not..

Glad you like my suggestions for this topic, ultraviolet, boy we do think a like.  :o

But anyway, I still have my Boy George & Culture Club collection with "The Crying Game" and I wouldn't give it up for anything.

And NO, that remake of the "Guys & Dolls" song, does not appear on Henley's Greatest Hits CD from 1995 (I was soooo hoping that Don would have included it, but he didn't) -- I need to look for it myself.  Now, I also remember this version of the "Guys & Dolls" song was picked up by the "Leap Of Faith" soundtrack -- the Steve Martin movie that year.

I do though remember a "Today Show" episode from November 1993, where Katie Couric interview Don Henley about appearing in the revival of "Guys & Dolls" and also remaking the song and then I heard it several times on the radio in the Tampa Bay area.

One other song that was great from 1993 was Sting's "Fields Of Gold".  (I think that's the name of that song, someone please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.)

Yes, "Fields of Gold" is correct. I believe that's from his Tem Summoners Tales CD from 1993 - there's a better song on that CD, though. It's called "Shape of My Heart" which was used as the ending song in 1994's "The Professional" (or more accurately "Leon").

I was once misinformed that Fields of Gold was sung by Bruce Willis which I thought was REALLY interesting.. my bubble got burst only a few years ago.. so lame...  :\'(

I wouldn't have given up that CD, but I thought I'd see him soon enough to get it back.. Well, I guess I'm not much better, I think I hung onto his "Schindler's List" soundtrack for a good amount of time, lol. Well, things have changed on that end where we can share our stuff more effectively  :)

Ohhh, "Leap of Faith" was a really good movie... what scene was that song (Don Henley's) used in? I'll have to give that one a listen real soon...

I know I didn't get to see the movie, "Leap of Faith" when it was out in theatres, didn't have enough money at the time. >:(

But I have seen it on TV since, but it's been awhile since it was aired (either on Broadcast or cable).  ???

But the last time I did see "Leap Of Faith", I know it was in one of the scenes where Steve Martin's holy man was trying to heal many people at once or preaching to as many of his believers at one time.  Hope that helps?

Sorry, if this sounds mean:

But Bruce Willis sing, "Fields Of Gold", what was the person smoking who told you that???????????  ;D

Of course I have to admit, except for two movies of his (and part of this was because of other actors or actresses or the concept of the movie) and those two were, "Death Becomes Her" & "12 Monkeys", I have been a very non-fan of Willis' (I really think he is waaaaaaaaay too full of himself).  :P

Of course much of that is because the creator and writer of "Moonlighting", Glen Gordon Caron, cast Willis in the role of David Addison then the actor he should have (Harley Venton).  But then again that's just MHO!  :D

Don't worry - I'm not offended..  ;) It was very gullable of me to believe that, not that I like Bruce Willis or anything, but I just thought it was nifty he sang such a good song... it sort of changed my view about him. It's sorta like how Patrick Swayze had a hit song through "Dirty Dancing" but you look at him and really don't see him as a singer. That's sort of how I saw this situation with Bruce Willis.

That's too bad they took Bruce Willis over Harley Venton in "Moonlighting." It may have left Cybil Shepherd with less fights and arguments..

Really?  Or are you kidding?  I can't tell with the winky emoticon.  1993 was the year I remember thinking that the 90s had truly arrived in full force.  Not 1991 as some say, but 1993.  I remember that clearly, that 4 year period from 1989 to 1993 had a lot of changes in the pop culture landscape, and politically too.  I started high school in the fall of 1989, and at that time kids were still listening to hair metal bands such as Warrant and late 80s pop groups like INXS, Depeche Mode, Erasure, etc, but when I came out of high school in 1993, none of that late 80s stuff was cool anymore.  Not even the dreaded New Kids on the Block.  That was such an amazing turn around in only 4 years.  It would be like everything from 1999 being totally uncool by 2003.

(well I guess it sorta did happen before with 1979 and 1983)

Yeah, I was basically serious - just poking a little fun at my past self for not realizing it. :)

It occured to me that one reason I didn't really notice the shift as it happened, was because my biggest connection to new music was VH1 (which I watched practically every day, especially after school).

They aimed for a somewhat older audience and didn't play things like grunge or heavy metal. It was mostly classic rock and softer pop videos. This worked for me since I loved Eddie Money, Phil Collins, Foreigner, Taylor Dayne etc. Still do.

I totally agree about the years. Even though grunge hit in late 1991, the 80's still hung on throughout 1992. Looking at the music of 1993 though, there wasn't a trace of 80's it seems. Hair metal was DOA. Gangsta rap also I think put a nail in the coffin faster as well.

Chris, would you agree that 1992 is kinda the last year that an 80's music fan could still like (even though it was definitely more 90's)?

I'd say 1982 is the same way concerning the 70's. It was mostly 80's, but you still had Little River Band, Alan Parsons and Kansas on the charts too.

1993 was a great year for music.  Some I liked:

U R the Best Thing - D:Ream
I Like It - D:Ream
Mr. Vain - Culture Beat
Do You See the Light - Snap! featuring Nikki Harris
Go West - Pet Shop Boys
I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing - Pet Shop Boys
No Limit - 2 Unlimited
Who Do You Think You Are - Saint Etienne
What is Love - Haddaway
U Got to Let the Music - Cappella
More and More - Captain Hollywood
Real Love - Time Frequency

Excellent as always, whistledog.  :)  I'll agree and add the following:

"Regret" - New Order
"Can You Forgive Her?" (Rollo Mix) - Pet Shop Boys
"Things Can Only Get Better" - D:Ream
"Life (Everybody Needs Somebody To Love)" - Haddaway
"Give It Up" - The Goodmen
"Jump They Say" (Brothers In Rhythm Mix) - David Bowie
"Big Time Sensuality" - Björk
"Love 4 Love" - Robin S
"Slide On The Rhythm" - Arizona feat. Zeitia
"Phorever People" (MK Mix) - Shamen
"Too Much Information" - Duran Duran
"The Key, The Secret" - Urban Cookie Collective
"I'm In Love With You" - BKS
"Find The Way" - Mars Plastic
"In The Name Of Love" - R.T.Z. Belgium feat. Mistri

By the way, I just wanted to say that Duran Duran's 1993 comeback with "Ordinary World" was probably the only thing they ever did that I liked.  I thought they were cheesy in the 80s...even for the 80s.

Some of these songs have already been mentioned...but some are bound to be mentioned again..

DJ Midas: Seems like you were into a lot of dance music then. The only one from your list that I know is "Regret" by New Order. Some of the bands/artists you mentioned I am familiar with, but I don't know the songs you listed. :-\\

You know what, I was never a big Mariah Carey fan, but I always dug that song. It reminds me of the '90s Disney/AC ballads, only with a more upbeat sound. I think I also know what you're talking about with the video (I vaguely recall seeing it on VH1 at the time).

1993 is one of my favorite years in music. A lot of my favorite songs come from that year like Ordinary World by Duran Duran, Can't Help Falling in Love by UB40, etc.

1993 was great indeed.  Here's a list of some great hits from '93

"Two Princes" by Spin Doctors
"Can't Help Falling In Love" by UB40
"Cryin" by Aerosmith
"Plush" by Stone Temple Pilots
"Hey Jealousy" by Gin Blossoms
"No Rain" by Blind Melon
"Soul To Squeeze" by Red Hot Chili Peppers
"Rebirth of Slick" by Digable Planets
"What Is Love" by Haddaway
"What's Up" by Four Non Blondes
"Creep" by Radiohead
"Are You Gonna Go My Way?" by Lenny Kravitz
"Break It Down Again" by Tears For Fears
"Who Is It" by Michael Jackson
"Sweat" by Inner Circle

It's funny, but 1993 seemed to have alot of "Reggae Ballads" (UB40 and Inner Circle)

Wow, I'm looking at the UK #1 Hits Chart from the entire 90's and i'm surprised by alot of the songs I see....

"Chocolate Salty Balls" by Chef (#1 on December 27th, 1998)
"Turtle Power" by Partners In Kryme (#1 on July 22nd, 1990)
"Do The Bartman" by The Simpsons (#1 on February 10th, 1991)

I was pleasantly surprised however to see the following songs reach #1 in the UK....

"Breakfast At Tiffany's" by Deep Blue Something
"Ready Or Not" by The Fugees
"Firestarter" by Prodigy
"Breathe" by Prodigy
"Return of the Mack" by Mark Morrison
"Boombastic" by Shaggy
"Dreams" by Gabrielle

I've pulled this one out for a particular mention...

At that time, The Simpsons hadn't even appeared on British TV (it was only shown via satellite and only a small percentage of the population would have been able to view it), which makes it all the more unbelievable how it managed to hit the top!

And it was a complete and utter load of tosh too!
