I'd have to say 1992-1994.  Grunge, pop country, Ninja Turtles, Sonic, Power Rangers, Simpsons, Seinfeld, it had it all.  :)

Followed by 1995-1996, then 1997-1999, then 1990-1991.  8)

What does one define as '90s' anyway? Should be take all the years 1990 to 1999 and divide them by ten to obtain the typical value for the 90s? I think, like most recent decades there are different periods to the 90s. While the early 90s were dominated by grunge, heavy metal, T-shirts and long hair, the latter half of the 90s saw the increasing influence of rap/hip-hop culture.

I guess what I mean but "most 90s" is what can't be stereotyped easily as "80s" or "00s".  90-91 can be seen as 80s and 97-99 can be seen as 00s.

I remember watching these commercials for BackStreet Boys and Britney thinking to myself 'these groups won't catch on'.

I'm sad I was wrong. But they are definitely 90s and Britney has struggled to define herself since the teen bop days.

I guess the key phrase is "can be seen as".  I don't consider 97-99 quite 00s, and they are 90s, but they're not like 90s like 1992 or 1995 is, you know?  Sure you still had Starbucks craze in 1999, but did you have Nirvana?  Wayne's World?  Beavis and Butthead?  No, no, no. 

Me, I see late 1997 to early 2003 as a period unto themselves, not quite fully 90s but still not full blown, pop-rap 2000s.  Call them the "millennium decade", "boy band era", "South Park age", whatever.  But if I had to pick a date to draw the line between 90s and 2000s it would be Nov. 2, 2000 or Sept. 11, 2001.

What are you talking about, 2002 and 2003 music is basically the exact same crap that is on now. Hip-hop dominated the charts in 2002. Hip-hop started taking over in 2001. So I have no idea what you're talking about. Maybe you could say that 1997-2001 have some similarities, but 97-99 are just as much a part of the 90s as other years, just a different part. I mean not to offend, but do you believe pop culture always shifts at the end of a decade?  I do not, and of course I know the 90s was Jan 1990 to Dec 1999 and the 2000s is Jan 2000 to Dec 2009, I'm talking just the feel, culture, and history.

What I'm saying is that the boy bands and bubble gum pop are a part of the '90s as well, some of that carried over in to 2000 and part of '01 too, but that's normal. A decade is 10 years and things are just different in different parts of the decade, so it's hard to say the '90s are defined by a specific things, because culture changed throughout the '90s.
