Subject: Full House: 80s or 90s show?
Written By: FullHouseFan on 01/24/05 at 12:32 am
I've always thought of Full House as a 90s show. :) But an early 90s show. Sure it started in 1987 but it wasn't received well until the fall of '89 or so. Plus it looked more modern than most late-80s and early-90s sitcoms and lasted until 1995. It was around for more than half the 90s and for less than 1/4 of the 1980s! But it was a great, innocent show, even if cheesy, predictable, and a bit homosexual. I'd watch it over "South Park", "Adult Swim", or any other disturbing garbage aired on third-world cable. Not to mention over ALL reality shows.

Do you 90s people have a take on Full House? The 80s guys are talking about it over in Eightiesland.

That's what I think :) The 80s episodes don't have many 80s references either.  Full House was so unpopular in the 1980s it almost got cancelled.  Saying its an 80s show is like saying Red Hot Chili Peppers are an 80s band.  Yes they were both around then and heard of, but neither were "popular" until the 1990s.

I didn't get mad but I acknowledged it was a dumb move. At least FH got attention in 87. It just wasn't positive attention. They should of done it in I Love the 90s: 1991 with Family Matters.

You mean they should HAVE done it. I know we speakers tend to mispronounce words, especially words that aren't stressed. "Should have" is a very common example, especially with its contraction, "should've", which probably leads to using of instead of have.
Btw, I agree with you in context. They should have definitely made reference to it in "I Love The 90s".

Yeah I understand. I don't care about english in friendly speech. Yeah Full House is pretty un-1980s when you think about it. But everything around in the 80s, even if just in Dec 89, HAS to be partially 80s.

Family Matters WAS mentioned on I Love the 90s part 1, but if you blink, you'll miss it because the first series speeds by stuff so fast.

Just like the Simpsons. That show began near the very end of the year 1989, which is why many people don't think of it as an 80s show. Oh, and sorry about the grammar.

I think it's funny how people, especially kids, tend to pick and choose and be very selective on what they want to classify as "80s" or "90s".ÂÂ
Full House running from 1987-1995 is a 90s show.ÂÂ
But Family Matters and Saved by the Bell that ran from 1989-1997 and 1989-1994 respectively are always called "80s shows".ÂÂ
Star Trek: The Next Generation, 1987-1994 is another "80s show".ÂÂ
And Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, 1990-1996, is usually lumped in as an 80s show despite never even airing in the late 80s.
I thought of Full House as an 80s show, because I first watched in 1987, and the episodes from 1987 to 1990/early '91 are the ones that appeal to me the most. But the truth is, this show is both 80s and 90s. The episodes from 1992 to 1995 stand out as clearly 90s.ÂÂ

I love Full House. I've been watching it since I was 6 years old. I consider Full House to be a 90s show. Why? Well.. It was on tv for most of the 90s and only 3 years in the 80s. They should have included Full House in I love the 90s.

Good post  :)  Yeah I see what you're saying.  Full House is both because it started in 87 and the first half of the show has an 80s air.  But the last two or three seasons are very 90s.  I mean one episode from then made a Beavis and Butthead reference.  I consider it a borderline 90s show though because it was so unpopular in its first two seasons (late 87- early 89).
I never saw Saved by the Bell as 80s.  I only remember watching it once back in the day in '94, either when it was almost done airing or when it just finished.  I've always seen it as early 90s.
As for Fresh Prince, I think it's considered an 80s show for one reason: the theme song.  The show came out in '90 so of course the theme song sounds like 80s rap.  Because that's exactly what it is!  Despite coming out in 1990, it is because DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince are an 80s band.  Well, to be fair though, that's not the only reason the 1990-92 yrs have some 80s hair.
Concerning "Family Matters", that to me is an 80s/90s border show because although it was on up to '98 I believe,
it was at its most popular in 1991 early in its run.  I really don't know exactly why it lasted so long.
Star Trek is considered 80s because that stuff is seen as retro.

BUMP
I know I said that FH had an 80's feel, but maybe I said that wrongly after reading this thread.
Sure, there was the occasional 80's reference - especially early on - but it relied much heavier on the early/mid 90's culture than the 80's. I think a better way to classify it is that it was more 90's with references and culture itself, but the "feel" and attitude of the show was more 80's.
Even compared to middle of the road shows like Seinfeld, it seemed a bit tame. It had that "safe" suburban sitcom feel (which isn't a bad thing - I like stuff like that!). Hypothetically, I think if the show idea was pitched 10 years earlier being exactly the way it is, only with references/styles/music of a decade earlier, it would've fit in perfectly.
It was like the last gap of 80's-type innocence in the 90's in a way.
