I don't think anyone mentioned:
"How Do I Live" by LeAnn Rimes (Trisha Yearwood also recorded it that year, but I dont know her version)
"Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai
"Where Have All The Cowboys Gone" and "I Don't Want To Wait" by Paula Cole

Excuse me, but I think "You Get What You Give" was from late 1998/early 1999. And I know "Kiss Me" was also from 1999; it was a top 10 hit. Also, I thought Dionne Farris only had one hit ("I Know", from 1995), but was "Hopeless (Like A Penny With A Hole In It)" popular in other countries or something?

Subject: Re: Songs you remember from 1997/favs or not

"Kiss Me" was a 1999 song from a 1997 CD. So, you're correct. The only date that matters is the date of a song's release. I gave a date I first heard it, not the date it was released.

My mistake, "You Get What You Give" was on a late 1998 CD so it propably wasn't heard until 1999. I associate that song with an event, but it wasn't a one time event -- wrong one!

"Hopeless" was on the radio, but not on stations that would play say Foo Fighters. It's from the 1997 movie "Love Jones".

It's sometimes difficult to come up with the correct year for a song. Which date do you go with if a song is released in December but doesn't really catch on until the next year? And what about songs that are heard in say NY or LA (or Europe) first and then everywhere else three months later or a even a year or more later? ( ??? )

Thanks, ...
:D

No prob.  ;)
I always go by the year in which the song debuts on the radio and/or hits the charts. Lots of times a song will be released as a single in December of a certain year but not become a hit until January or February. But still, I first heard "Kiss Me" in early 1999 (probably because that's when it first got radio airplay and hence hit the charts), but I didn't know that it was recorded two years earlier. Thanks for letting me know.

Good lord, I remember this year vividly. I was 16, and heard a lot of the songs already mentioned in the break room at work. (McDonald's)

The ones I remember most, probably because the radio stations overplayed them are:

OMC - How Bizzare
The Verve Pipe - Freshmen
Savage Garden - I just want you
Savage Garden - Truly, madly, deeply
That song with standing outside of a phone booth... (can't remember the name of it).

Great year.

Maybe you don't understand it, because of the Dutch language, but get a laugh when watching the videos...  ;D

Btw, those were parodies on our biggest subculture back then, 'gabber'.

Songs I remember:

P Diddy (then known as Puff Daddy, now well he changed his name as many times as Prince, lol) - All About the Benjamins, Been Around the World, Got to Keep on Moving
Spice Girls - Say You'll Be There, What You Really Want, 2 Become 1 (I actually liked that song)
Hansen - Mmm-bop
Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity
Will Smith - Men In Black
Mariah Carey - Honey
Sugar Ray - Fly
Sublime - The Wrong Way
Bone - Ready For War and If I Could Teach the World
Smashmouth - Walking on the Sun
Chumba Wumba - Tub-thumping
Mighty Mighty Bosstones - The Impression That I Get
Janet Jackson - Velvet Rope
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On (Didn't care for the song or movie, but they were popular)

I'm going have to start buying some of these songs from iTunes now. Brings back a lot of memories. I can't believe 1997 is almost 15 years ago.

BIZUMP (a 1997-ish thing to say, lol) now that I have created my 1997 playlist since I'm starting to feel more nostalgic about that year. I can't believe its 16 years ago now. That was the year I graduated high school, and this close friend of the family's son who was 2 years old at the time is graduating this year.

In the US it was a hit in 1998, as was the title track from that same album ("Ray Of Light"), but they were likely recorded in 97.

One of my favourite songs of 1997 was one of the few instances where I enjoy a cover of an 80s song more than the 80s song itself.  This was on the radio all the time and I still love it to this day ...

There certainly were!! I really liked that song when it came out. And I still hear it today, although not as often as others. If I had my own station I would have such a wide variety of songs to play that you could never hear the same song twice in one 24-hour period... and not the same old handful of songs every day.

I was thinking about Justin Timberlake and my memories of him when I was a kid and he was in NSYNC, and one of the few things I remember is his hair(I remember when "It's gonna be me" came out in 2000 and thinking about how he hasd short hair and now an afro, stuff like this, or how JC Chasez was going to be the man, instead it was Justin)

and I remember one video, I was thinking about a memory of either NSYNC or Backstreet boys in a music video as a kid playing basketball, so I looked up to refresh this memory and it was NSYNC(as I remember Justin Timberlake, so I don't know why I should be asking whether it was the Backstreet Boys), "Here we Go" From 1997, that's probably my first memories of NSYNC,

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5tsyz_n-sync-here-we-go_music#.UdslBPm1FfQ

Note I was born in 1994 and my first memories are from 1996, best/basic memories started in 1997 and my spectacle was 1998 and 1999, 2000 was good but not as good.

Note I was born in 1994 and my first memories are from 1996, best/basic memories started in 1997 and my spectacle was 1998 and 1999, 2000 was good but not as good.

Do you remember the N*Sync and BSB concerts on the Disney Channel? :P

Bloody 'Candle In The Wind 1997'... >:(

Okay, tragic though the circumstances may have been, but there was no need for this pointless re-write!

Yes! Holy crap, to think it's been nearly 15 or so years now. Hell, remember when Disney Channel used to show concerts in general?

Good lord, I remember this year vividly. I was 16, and heard a lot of the songs already mentioned in the break room at work. (McDonald's)

The ones I remember most, probably because the radio stations overplayed them are:

OMC - How Bizzare
The Verve Pipe - Freshmen
Savage Garden - I just want you
Savage Garden - Truly, madly, deeply
That song with standing outside of a phone booth... (can't remember the name of it).

Great year.

I also like the song TMD. I currently have that song on my tablet and listen to it pretty often.

How about the song by Meredith Brooks whose title we can't mention? That was her only hit, if I'm not mistaken.

She followed it up with What Would Happen.
