Subject: SoCal radio station: Y-107
Does anyone in the SoCal area (LA or Orange County) know what happened to Y-107? This was, by far, THE best radio station ever: they played what the other radio stations never played. It was basically an 80s and 90s modern rock station, but it seemed (listened) like more than that. They played the usual stuff from renown artists, but then they would play lots of 80s bands like The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, Kiling Joke, Faith No More, The English Beat, Metallica, ABC, etc - not just their hit singles, but also their album tracks. The 90s stuff they played was awesome: the early 90s stuff (Nirvana, Urge Overkill, Sugar, Suede, Blur, The Breeders, STP, Radiohead, Soul Asylum) mixed in with late 90s non-mainstream bands like Kent and Rialto (two of the better bands from the late 90s). This was the radio station that got me back into buying music (got me interested in music period). Before this station, I used to listen to KNAC (which "went Spanish") and, even before then, I used to listen to Pirate radio (which also "went Spanish"). Y-107 "went Spanish" too, but I wish to know...what the hell happened? Two other stations that I used to listen to as well were Groove and KMIX (the former "went adult/contemporary" while the other "went Christian").I absolutely must be the unluckiest guy when it comes to picking a radio station to listen to...I don't really mind most of the changes, but Y-107 REALLY hit a sore spot. Any info on why this happened would be appreciated.

I can relate! I live in Houston and that happens alot here! We do, however have a GREAT radio station that almost went off the air recently. They were formally 107.5 The Buzz. Now they are 94.5 The Buzz. They have an awesome website that you can actually listen to what is being played. Check it out!

Y-107 went Spanish because everybody that liked 80s listened to KROQ. I totally agree with you that Y-107 was a better station because KROQ talked WAY too much and rove me crazy. If you're lookin for good 80s stations try star 98.7 on FRIDAYS, 95.9 anytime, they play a good miz of stuff. If you like classic rock a really awesome station for that is 95.5 KLOS. Hope they don't go spanish too right??

I thought 95.9 turned into a Christian music station...hmmm...Believe me, I listen to those stations as well as Arrow (the other classic rock station). Star is a main staple for my radio listening (I already programmed it in to my car radio), but they NEVER play the stuff I request by phone or fax (I don't think requesting a Roxy Music song is too much to ask). I think I found a radio station that may have some possibilities: 94.3/KOOL - they played lots of David Bowie last week and songs by The Smiths (other than "How Soon Is Now?"). This station shows some promise, although I do without the teeny-bop music they play most of the time (in between the good songs) like The Backstreet Boys and Jessica Simpson (nothing against these artists, but they have a HUGE amount of airtime on most other stations AND television - so why take this little niche too?). This station still has a looooong way to go, but they have the right idea. I guess the demise of Y-107 will remain a mystery...or one can make the good guess that they did not get the sponsors needed to carry the radio station for much longer. I was just wondering if, maybe, they turned into one of those internet radio stations...wishful thinking.
