Subject: Telephones
Who remembers when cordless telephones first became available? How about cellular phones?
Subject: Re: Telephones
I had a friend that's dad worked for AT&T in 85 or 86 and had a cellular phone (car phone). Not sure if they were available to everyone yet or not.
He said it cost a several hundred dollars a month, and some day everyone would be able to afford one. I thought yeah right. Shows what I know.
As for cordless telephones, I don't remember. It seems like it was mid to late 80's. Get ChuckyG to get that Sears catalog out and see if he can put a date to it.

Cordless phones were avalible in 1989.
Cell phones came into use about the early 90s, but the concept was being talked about in the early 80s.
Hope that helps.

Cell phones have been around since, get this, the 60s.. they were only used in cities though, and only the very wealthy had them.. we're talking car phones, not the little handhelds of today.. watch a movie from the 60s about the rich, and you'll almost always see one in the back of a limo..
I'll break out ye 'old Sears catalog.. but that will only tell us when cordless phones became mass-marketed.. I'm sure though, that they weren't around in the 70s though.. definately early 80s..

Ah but it seems like only a few years ago when I used to spy young bucks with dummy handsets in the consoles of their cars, pretending they had car phones... Now you can get a phone smaller than your hand for $1 (connection fees and calls extra), as long as you sign a contract with the service provider that you'll use it for twelve months and make at least $300 worth of calls in that time. Thanks to Nokia the entire economy of Finland has been riding on the cellular phone industry ever since they've become an everyday item!
