Subject: Sports in the 90s
This is a near carbon copy of my post on the 80s message board, asking why there's no section dedicated to sports in each decade (I don't know enough about the 70s though to post there).
If the webmaster were to make a section, here would be my contributions
NFL:
1991 SB Giants vs. Bills (one point game, remembered for the final FG attempt)
1997 SB Broncos vs. Packers (another close championship game for the ages)
1998 NFC Championship Vikings vs. Falcons (as much as this one pains me, it is one of the most notable upsets ever)
College Football:
1994 Colorado vs. Michigan (another painful moment for yours truly, but Kordell Stewart did to the miracle bomb in the 90s what Flutie did in the 80s)
1993 Championship game Florida State vs. Nebraska
1997 Missouri vs. Nebraska (one kick and a dive BARELY saves Nebraska's title reign that season)
Baseball:
1991 WS Game 6 Twins vs. Braves (Puckett's team saving homer)
1991 WS Game 7 (scoreless into extra-innings, nail biter to the end)
1991 WS as a whole
1994 season strike (black eye for the sport that resulted in watering down of the rules to bring fans back years later)
1997 WS Game 7 Marlins vs. Indians (another nail-biter for the ages)
College Basketball:
1991 Championship Semis Duke vs. UNLV (upset of the decade)
1992 Regional Final Duke vs. Kentucky (game that would define college b-ball in the 90s)
1999 Championship Connecticutt vs. Duke (while UConn was no slouch, everyone was saying Duke would steamroll to the title. UConn had other plans in mind)
Thanks

This is a good idea--a lot of people's memories are built on sporting moments, just like others' are based around movie moments or music moments. If there was to be a sports section included however I would think that, due to the international reach of the Internet and the broad appeal of a site like this, that it would have to go much, much further than people's favourite NFL and baseball games and include stuff like Olympic Games, Soccer World Cup, Rugby World Cup, Wimbledon, international Cricket series, motor racing Grand Prix, etc. Everyone would have their favourite sporting moments of course, which are great, but I will go so far as to suggest that America-centric sporting results like Superbowls and ice hockey games can be very boring to people who aren't from the US or Canada.

Being from the States, a monthly alternative tabloid from where I live ran a story about a cricket game using the lingo used in the game, with a disclaimer saying "we can't understand this." Here in the States, ESPN used to run Aussie Rules (a misnomer outside the Land Down Under) football games, and I always wondered why they kept track of the goals and behinds scored in the game. I thought that this was sort of a tiebreaker but I found out that one game ended in a tie, with (I'm making this up so you'll understand) Team A scored 15 goals 6 behinds 96 points and Team B scored 14 goals 12 behinds 96 points (so the game ended in a tie with no winner!) so apparently it is not for a tiebreaker because if it were, the team with 15 goals would have defeated the team with 14 goals, both scoring the same number of points! The last time the Grand Final (of Aussie Rules football) was supposed to be shown live on ESPN 2, they bumped it for a baseball game (of course you know baseball means more to us Yanks!) that was an important game in determining who would go on to the postseason. And since the Olympics will be in the Land Down Under this year…

Well this is precisely my point. American sports are just as alien to us as some of ours are to you (being from Sydney, where Rugby League is the more popular sport, I have very little idea about Aussie Rules myself)... What I was suggesting was that any sports section that were to be featured should cover highlights from all sports, not just from one part of the world. We all have our national sporting heroes and moments, so they should all be represented.

funny this became an active thread on this site, when I responded on the 80s site with a big list of reasons I Want/Don't Want to do a sports section.. this of course, being one of them.. trying to determine what should get covered and what shouldn't... my sites are somewhat US centric, only because I can only live in one country at a time..
plus.. what counts as a spot? Curling? it's in the Olympics right? so is Bowling.. and stuff like Nascar? I could probably do a single site just devoted to great sports moments around the world.. but then again..
