1999!
i know, lots of people hate this year, people on the 00's board are PO'd that its "still the 90s" just cause there's a few things from 1999 still around, people here treat 1999 like the 80's people treat 1989. But i don't think the year was really so bad.
musically, it was pretty awesome.

Also Freaks and Geeks, Family, and Futurama all started in 1999. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire too.
Probably wasn't the best year in movies, but it was still pretty good, American Beauty, Sleep Hollow, Analyze This, Any Given Sunday, Entrapment, Varsity Blues, American Pie, 10 things I Hate about You, Austin Powers 2.
And one of the most awesome game consoles, the Dreamcast, came out in 99. the 2K sports series, Soul Calibur, Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, Crazy Taxi, its too bad lots of people slept on it waiting for the PS2, because Sega really put some creativity into the Dreamcast games. It was partially Sega's fault though, they ran out of units @ Christmas time 1999, and they had to delay their gaming network until around when PS2 was released. But still, good effort.

1999 was a good year, but it just like 1989 and 1979. None of those years were very reflective of their actual decades. Only 1969 was accurate in the stereotypical image of "the 60's". 1999 just didn't fit in with 1991-1998, so I think that's why people don't like it that much.
Plus as you pointed out, a lot of our styles today are still very 1999.

I want to add, that the best thing about 1999 was that it was a great year for movies. The great movies made me forget about the pop culture shift that occured when Britney, Christina, and the boy bands took over.
In 1999 we had such great movies like The Matrix, The Insider, American Beauty, The Sixth Sense, Being John Malkovich, The Prince of Eygpt, Sleepy Hollow, etc, etc. Then there were the movies that weren't really that good but still got a lot of publicity like Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and The Blair Witch Project.
And the memories of the previous years great movies like Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, and L.A. Confidential were still fresh in our minds.

hey dont dog the blair witch project! the forest scenes were shot in my hometown. It was kinda cool for Maryland to be in the spotlight for a little while, instead of being the DC metro area. Well, until the idiots showed up and vandalized stuff.

So why couldn't the song be entitled1984? ???
If it was titled 1999,why didn't he sing it 5 years ago,why 20?

"1999" rhymed with the song's verses. If he sang "1984" it would not have rhymes. Besides, I think somebody else had recorded a song called 1984.

What I think Prince meant by that song was he visualized everyone having a major party at the (so-called) end of the millinnium (which didn't actually end until 2001) which they did. He was singing about partying like that.

Yeah but you forgot about the boybands and rap-metal that started that year.
I remember listening to those 112, Monica, Donell Jones, Tyrese, Dru Hill and Blessid Union Of Soul Songs that you listed. That was the year the Red Hot Chilli Peppers reformed. Gutarist John Furchainte came back to the band. "Spend My Life With You" by Eric Benet and Tamia was a R&B great song that year too.
