Subject: I love Cats and Dogs however...

Written By: AndrewTalkingWalnut on 01/14/04 at 09:13 a.m.

In the 1990's I was considering getting a pet cat,
but today, I'm like
I love Cats and Dogs, but I'm too Lazy to have a Pet, and I don't want to spend the money.
Anyone else feel that way.

I'm content just petting cats and dogs in the Petstores. ::)

If you could be any animal, which kind would you be?

I'd choose to be a Housecat, but not just any housecat, the housecat of a Rich Hollywood celebrity.

You're kidding right? I've got two cats, and I am THE lazy king. Cats are pretty cheap and low maintance..you can go to your local ASPCA or city pound and rescue/adopt one for cheap (and they will all have their shots and medical taken care of).
You don't need to walk them or take them outside to do their "business"...yeah the litter box is kinda of a pain, & get used to finding cat hair on everything..
But all cats want is to be rubbed, a warm cushy place to sleep (usually on top of your chest or stomach!), some string or yarn to play with and an occasional tuna treat..simple.

I've gotten all my cats as strays.  I have personal issues with so called "breeders" when our pet shelters are overflowing with pets.  Why pay?  ???

I'm with Gumbypiz, they usually are low maintenance.. or at least the ones I have had were.  As long as I feed them good food and show them affection and bring out the laser pointer for some exercise from time to time, they are pretty happy.  In fact, I sometimes think the cat lets me live there and pay the rent!  :D

I got my current cat from a girl I know who runs a pet store.  She has a friend who works as a vet and runs the local animal shelter.  The animal shelter can't give away pets, yet this girl I know gets them from the shelter, has their shots updated, and sells them like crazy from her pet store.  Weird, eh.  ???  Even she thought so.  All those people could have gone down to the shelter and picked them up for nothing!  Go figure... <shrug>

I have an outside dog, Bailey Jack, that I love dearly.  This past June I got my first indoor cat, Gracie Lou.  A month later we got another indoor cat, Mercy Mae.  While I love Bailey to death, there is a lot of work that goes along with a dog.  My baby girls, on the other hand, are a breeze.  I wouldn't take nothing for my cats.  They'd have to kill me to take them.  They've got a pretty good life at my house.  Food whenever they want it, toys galore, nice windows to look out, sunny spots to nap in, me to nap on.  I'd love to be a cat!

Also, someone mentioned that they feel like their cat just lets them live there and pay rent.  Well, I've heard it said that dogs have owners while cats have staff.  Ha!

I have a suggestion for you-LAND HERMIT CRABS! They are really cool to have as pets. And they don't need to have a lot of water around, just a sponge soaked with water so they can drink it and wet their breathing apparatus with it. They also like a small bowl or saucer with water for dunking in. There are plenty of pretty shells you can buy for your pet(s),and there is commercially made food you can give them. As far as housing them, a large terrarium or fish tank with sand(or gravel) on the bottom, and places to climb on or hide in make a perfect home for 'em. By the way, I have a Calico cat named Tika, cats require maintenance but the love she gives back to me a hundredfold is all WORTH IT! :-*

To NascarNut,
In your Group Home, how exactly does it work, do they let you have a pet cat.?

Actually I live in a supported apartment, which is a lot more independent and flexible than a group home. The reason they let people have pets is they believe that pets are good therapy for people with emotional illness, which I DEFINITELY agree with! I had to put down a $50 pet deposit against any accidental damage the pet may cause, otherwise it was easy to get and AFFORD Tika.My counselor took me to a couple of shelters until I found the kind of cat I wanted(a female because sometimes even NEUTERED male cats spray!). I found my Tika at the Atlantic County Animal Shelter in Pleasantville NJ. Before I could take her home, they looked into my circumstances and my background. A week later I brought Tika home. She is one spoiled cat, if I get a hamburger she gets a piece!

To NascarNut:
I don't think I could handle living on my own. What is it like the supported apartment, do you share it with anyone.
I have OCD too, but it's under control,
I don't know if I could Psychologically handle the stress of living on my own.

I chose my apartment mate,he's a casual friend I've known since the late 1980's. And I live in a safe, quiet neighborhood in Absecon NJ. My apartment complex is close to public transit AND shopping. Also my town has free summer concerts and other activities.
