Well, I'm only 13 and don't know that much about 90's culture, but essentially it started off with alot of 'grunge rock' and 'punk rock' music, spearheaded in particular by a song 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by a group called Nirvana (that was a hit in 1991).
From them on the 90's moved in to a slower, more relaxed culture (following on from the global recessions I think), and it became an era of love songs and ballads. The 90's 'feel' really peaked in 1998 with releases such as 'My Heart Will Go On' by Celine Dion and 'Believe' by Cher. Listen to these and you might get a feel for that period.
"The remaining year or so and this decade have gone down the toilet since rap began to be considered music, and evil teenage pop has taken over'.
As in regards to events, I can't really help you, but I'm sure someone else can and they'll probably give you an entirely different perspective on the 90's aswell!
Hoped I gave you a small insight - listen to some hit songs and you should get a good idea
