Subject: Enter Sandman - Metallica

Would you believe I only heard this song three months ago? Someone lent me a copy and I absolutely love it. One of my favourite rock songs - and the intro is excellent.

Stop whatever you're doing and go buy the album right now! :P

You seriously don't know? Wow! 'Enter Sandman' is the first track on their untitled 1991 album, better known as the "Black" album. It has an all-black cover with an almost invisible sketch of a rattlesnake on it.

Yeap, that's one album you can listen to all the way through! All the tunes are good.

Ah, thanks Goreripper. I'll have a look (I'm not promising anything though - I'm still not sure about them to get a full album.)

Well if you like 'Enter Sandman' you should like the whole album, or most of it at least. It's been around long enough that you should be able to get it from a budget bin or something somewhere. I wouldn't recommend getting the latest album though, as it has a very coarse and uneven sound. Do you have any other Metallica albums?

I have no Metallica albums, Goreripper. I'm a bit of a metal virgin so to speak. I will look out for that album - Thanks for the advice.

I did listen to Pantera's album once but I forgotten which one (ah! The one with 'Walk' on it).

Seriously, Bobby, Metallica's Black CD is an essential!

No problem. If you feel like dabbling in a little of the hard stuff but don't want to be scared off right away, try Metallica's "Load" album as well, along with "Cryptic Writings" and "Risk" by Megadeth. The new Anthrax album called "We've Come For You All" is excellent also. It's heavy, but it's not like having an anvil fall on you.  :)

Thanks very much, Goreripper. I thought I had an anvil drop on my head listening to Cradle of Filth - God I needed the painkillers after that. I appreciate the 'softly, softly' sentiments.

I will look out for those albums.  :D

Just to add Goreripper, my mate James is going to lend me the 'Black' album so I'll have a listen to that at work.

A couple of Metallica's older tunes are easy to listen to for a beginner:

"Fade To Black"
"One"

:)

Listening to Cradle of Filth is like listening to someone drag their nails down a blackboard.  :)

Ah, yes, "Enter Sandman" -- numero uno from one of my top ten fave albums.  And yes, I love the intro to it as well.

I have an eclectic taste, Howard. I am willing to try anything musical once. I tried Cradle of Filth once and I didn't like it - at least I have a semi educated view on it now.

I don't mind a bit of Iron Maiden, Def Leopard and Judas Priest (Living after midnight is one of my fave songs) and Aerosmith are a great band.

I love my 80s stuff though, Howard. It's what gets me through my working day.  :)

Bobby, I would suggest "Damnation" by Opeth also. One of the best albums of the year.

I have not heard of Opeth but I might sneak a few tracks from Kazaa to find out what they are like.

Has anybody heard of The Darkness? 'A thing called love' hit the British charts and it absolutely rocks.

MOP is THE seminal Metallica album. That being said, Ride The Lightning comes a close second- Call of Cthulu and all that- but my fave bit of Metallica music ever is from Kill 'Em All, where Pulling Teeth runs into Whiplash. I've never before or since heard a bass solo like Pulling Teeth, and feel the song is a stunning tribute to Cliff Burtons' skill 'at the axe'.

They're playing that song more often on the radio now around here, which is a good thing. I agree, that is a cool tune!

I came to like Metallica through my brother.  Sort of like learn by osmosis.  He would play it constantly, usually at full blast.  I was more of a pop fan, but knew all the words to everything off the Black Album.  My brother and his now wife even had "Nothing Else Matters" played at their wedding, during the ceremony.  How cool is that?
