Does anyone know what the song "Under the Bridge" is really about?

I've long held the belief that it deals with heroin addiction.

Never really thought about it, but you could be right. I'm not sure myself.

I think the song is about a guy's life in Los Angeles, where he's kind of lonely but loves his town. His plight isn't that uncommon among young men, but unlike him, I haven't used heroin (but maybe other stuff ;D), he says, "I drew some blood..."

To clear this up, Under the Bridge is specificly about Anthony Kedis (lead singer) experiences, his and others drug use, "the scene" in/around RHCP home of LA, & its aftermath.
Kedis is quite honest in telling about his (and other band members) use of heroin & drugs in the late 80's. The original gutairist of the Chilli Peppers, Hillel Slovak died from an overdose in '88. A very hard loss to the band who all were best friends/grew up together, and went to school together in LA.
BTW, Under the Bridge, isn't the only song dealing with drug use the RHCP has done. "Knock Me Down" from Mothers Milk is a track devoted to Slovak, proclaiming their pledge not to use anymore..."If you see me getting high, if you see me getting high, knock me down, I'm not getting high..."
