Subject: Macaulay Culkin

"If this kid grows up into another one of those pathetic, screwed-up former child stars who are always spilling their guts on the talk shows, a lot of adults will share the blame."
--Roger Ebert, 1993

What I want to know is, why was Macaulay Culkin such a star in the first place?  I don't get it.

I dont know
I'd rather would've seen Elijah Wood in all of Mac's roles..
at least he can pull a movie off...

And they are both in The Good Son..
which Elijah was the better one....

He was a cute kid in the "Home Alone" movies. I'll give him credit where credit is due. That one (live action/animated) movie the "Page Master" wasn't too bad, either. That's where he should have ended his career.

You can also ask why was Jerry Mathers popular as Beaver in the 50's?  Why was Ron Howard popular as Opie in the 60's?

Why was Gary Coleman popular in the late 70's and early 80's as Arnold Jackson?

And why was Emmanuel Lewis (Webster) popular in the mid 80's?

For all the same reasons that Macaulay Culkin was popular in the very late 80's and early 90's.  They were cute kids in their day.  Macaulay Culkin had already won over audiences with his Uncle Buck film in 1989, then he shot to stardom in 1990 when he did Home Alone.  Home Alone 2: Lost in New York was a solid sequel that was pretty funny too.

But then Culkin got older around 1993/1994 and became a teenager.  He wasn't a cute little kid anymore and he became one of those messed up kids that Roger Ebert warned about.

I think he was totally cute and sweet in Uncle Buck, plus the Home Alone movies!  He also had quite an engaging screen presence which is more than can be said for many child actors.

I liked Home Alone 1 and Uncle Buck. Home Alone 2 was a virtual remake of the first one.

Macaulay ended up the same way as Corey Feldman. That is a shame.

That's the problem with novelty child stars. They grow up.

I still think those Home Alone movies are still really good. Macaulay was a cute kid but grew up into an ugly adult.

a cute child actor that turned into a very gawky and ugly teenager, he remains very ugly and strange to this day.

he also married some nasty crackwhore at a very young age.
